The Bengal Chief Minister said BJP claims that the money from the coal scam goes to Kalighat, the area in Kolkata where Mamata Banerjee’s house is, but failed to name anyone “Is the money going to Kali Maa?” she asked.
Days after challenging the Bharatiya Janata Party to arrest her if they so claim she’s guilty, Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress Head Mamata Banerjee took a swipe at BJP on Wednesday, saying that if her family members get a notice from central agencies, she will fight it legally even though it has become “tough” to do so nowadays.
Her statement comes after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned TMC general secretary, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, to the agency’s Kolkata office on Friday in regard to the alleged coal scam case.
Stating that she has “faith in the judiciary”, Banerjee said that if proved that she encroached upon any property or aided anyone in doing the same, “it can be bulldozed.” “BJP alleges coal scam proceeds go to Kalighat but don’t name anyone; is the money going to Maa Kali?” the chief minister had asked.
Kalighat, located in the south of Kolkata is famous for its Kali Mandir and Banerjee’s house is located there On Monday while addressing a rally to celebrate the founders day of the TMC student wing, Banerjee vowed to dethrone BJP from the Centre in 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
Besides the ED summon to Abhishek, a petition has been filed in Kolkata high court by lawyer Arijit Majumdar alleging there has been an unexplained rise in the wealth of the chief minister’s family since 2011 when TMC first came to power in Bengal ending the 34-year reign of Left. Public Interest Litigation (PIL) also demands an investigation into the matter through federal agencies.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee then ordered an independent probe for tracing any property in her name or in the name of any of her family members illegally encroaching upon government land. Her reactions come in the wake of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed at a division bench of Calcutta High Court, demanding a central agency probe into her family’s assets.
“In the Infrastructure Standing Committee meeting of the Cabinet today, I have ordered that a team led by the state Chief Secretary, comprising of the finance secretary, land and land reforms department secretary will conduct an inquiry to determine whether I or any of my family members have illegally encroached onto government land. If any such property is traced, the committee has the liberty to use a bulldozer and demolish the same. They need not take permission from me or anyone else for the same,” Banerjee said.
She maintains that the address in Kalighat where she and her family stays is the property of Rani Rashmoni. “We live as tenants on that land and do not own any land there,” Banerjee said, claiming that she is being accused by media reports highlighting the petition and considering whether the petition has been admitted at court or not.
She further said that she lives alone and only gets together with her family members on social occasions such as Kali Puja, Rakshabandhan, or Bhai Phonta. “I joined politics to serve society but now, I often feel that I would have quit politics much earlier seeing the dirty current-day politics and that my and my family members would have to face such slander. My chair is the common people’s chair and I am here to serve them,” she told the media.
