The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka will table the 19th amendment in the Parliament with some changes to the clauses soon.
A tug of war seems to have broken out between Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha and President Gotabaya Rajapaksha. The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka is now trying to table the 19th amendment in the Parliament with some changes to the clauses in the amendment which will take away the powers of the executives and empower back to the Parliament.
Current situation
For weeks now, there has been a political unrest in Sri Lanka’s government parties and its coalition members, many of which are now in the side of the opposing party of 11-member alliance, calling for the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha to resign while some others are stating that if there is a resignation, then it should be the President Gotabaya Rajapaksha resigning.
Reason for the unrest
According to the senior political sources, all the recent cabinet appointments were done by the President Gotabaya Rajapaksha’s selection alone and the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha was not consulted at all, nor did he attend the swearing-in ceremonies.
The Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha had been in the favour of calling in for some senior ministers to be included in the cabinet, but President Gotabaya Rajapaksha has been insistent on a younger cabinet hoping to calm down the protesters and put Sri Lanka back on the track.
Conclusion
According to different sources, the party leaders will meet today and tomorrow to discuss the proposals, one of them being the consensus for the President Gotabaya Rajapaksha to step down from his position, and the proposal of amendment of clauses in the 19th amendment by the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha.
If the consensus is reached or not and whether the President Gotabaya Rajapaksha step down from his position is to be seen.
