Aam Aadmi Party’s Bhagwant Singh Mann took the oath as the new Chief Minister of Punjab yesterday in Khatkar Kalan.
Bhagwant Singh Mann, the 48 year politician and a former comedian by profession assumed office as Punjab’s 18th Chief Minister at the state Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. Mann swore-in for the post yesterday from the ancestral village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Khatkar Kalan.
Along with Mann, the party members and supporters of AAP attended the ceremony in ‘Basanti’ turbans and dupattas. Yellow turbans symbolise the colour of Freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
The ‘Pandal’ was set up in front of the Bhagat Singh memorial in the village in Nawanshahr district. The ground was filled with AAP supporters wearing Basanti turban. Along with the elected AAP candidates, other senior party leaders were also present during the ceremony.
Bhagwant Singh Mann’s Family
Mann’s children, Seerat Kaur Mann and Dilshan Mann attended the ceremony at Khatkar Kalan on Wednesday. Both his children came from the United States to attend the event.
Mann’s ex-wife, Inderpreet Kaur said, “Both our children have reached India and they will attend Bhagwant’s swearing-in ceremony at Khatkar Kalan. They are overwhelmed and very excited. They need some time to sink-in this feeling”.
Mann addresses the oath ceremony
During the oath taking ceremony, Mann said that we have to respect even those who didn’t vote for us. He also thanked everyone and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
Further, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “It’s a big day for Punjab. In this golden morning of new hope, the entire Punjab will today come together and take a pledge to make it a prosperous Punjab. To witness the historic moment, I have also left for Khatkar Kalan, the native village of Shaheed Bhagat Singh”.
Moreover, Congress MP Manish Tewari also thanked Punjab current CM Bhagwant Mann for inviting him to the ceremony. Quite the contrary, Manish Tewari was not invited to Charanjit Singh Channi’s oath taking ceremony last year.
With a tweet, Manish Tewari thanked the newly elected CM of Punjab. He said, “I congratulate Bhagwant Mann on being sworn in as Chief Minister. I thank him for inviting me to his swearing-in. Due to Parliament being in session I will not be able to make it. It is ironic I was not invited to Charanjit Singh Channi’s swearing-in though he was one of my MLA’s”.
