The discovery was made in Dinosaur Fossil National Park which is in Madhya Pradesh. The eggs belong to titanosaurs, which is a diverse group of sauropod dinosaurs. This phenomenon has been only seen in birds and not in any reptiles. 52 nests of titanosaurs found scientists
A unique fossilized Dinosaur egg has been discovered by a team of researchers from Delhi University in Madhya Pradesh, which are offering new insights. The team of scientists found 52 nests of titanosaurs sauropod in the park in which one of the nests carried 10 eggs.
This unique discovery has been published in Scientific Reports, which is a nature group journal which has been titled ‘ First ovum-in-ovo pathological titanosaur egg throws light on the reproductive biology of sauropod dinosaurs.
Scientists have discovered a rare phenomenon of eggs-within-eggs within dinosaurs for the first time. This phenomenon has been only seen in birds and not in any reptiles.
The journal said that the oviduct morphology was alike to that of birds opening up the chance for sequential laying of the eggs in this group of sauropod dinosaurs. This new discovery suggests that ovum-in-ovo pathology is not distinctive to birds and sauropods share a reproductive behaviour that are very similar to other archosaurs.
