The challenges faced in the development of local and urban cities are addressed by all the stakeholders during this World Cities Day.
Significance of World Cities Day, 2022
Since the Indus valley civilization, people tend to move from rural areas to cities and towns – “Urbanization” occurs. They also find jobs in cities for a better living. But still many people in rural areas are unaware of these developments. To promote this urbanization globally, and to know about the challenges involved we celebrate this “World Cities Day“, on 31st October every year.
Main Objectives
The main objectives of this day are:
1) to bring to light the challenges faced in urbanization by different stakeholders globally
2) to know about climate change and its impact on the lives of people in cities.
Since its inception, the general theme of this world cities day is “Better City, Better Life”. In addition, there is a sub-theme too every year and this year it is “Act Local to Go Global.”
Formation
World Cities Day was established through a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 27th Dec 2013.On 31st October 2014, it was first celebrated in Shanghai, China. The United Nations in 2014, came up with a general theme, ‘Better City, Better Life, and a sub -theme Adapting Cities for Climate Resilience’ for 2021.
About today’s event
“World Cities Day 2022” is being held in Shanghai again after 2014 in order to display its bigger influences and elements to make it better” said by director of the Shanghai Housing and Urban-Rural Development Commission, Mr Yao Kai. He also added, “Shanghai has explored more to have better quality and development through which it has reached great heights. This will be showcased through this year’s events. “
During today’s event, “The first Shanghai award” will be presented to honor global cities for their sustainable developments and progress. It will also promote an experience among other cities.
Ways to Celebrate World Cities Day
1. By learning about the history of various cities.
2. By analyzing the root causes of several problems in the city and seeking solutions.
3. By creating awareness about this day among our friends and family and collecting their views on this.
