Right after the death of 49 Armenian soldiers and 50 Azerbaijani soldiers in what was the deadliest clash between the ex-Soviet republics after 2020, where the death count ticked over 6500, fresh clashes now erupted a day later.
Armenia’s defense ministry said that the fighting began late at night when Azerbaijani troops began shelling and used drone attacks on various regions of Armenia.
The foreign ministry of Azerbaijan, on the other hand, defended the action of Azerbaijani troops, justifying it by saying that it was a reaction to a “large-scale provocation” by the Armenian border force. They said that Armenian troops had planted mines and had attacked the military positions of Azerbaijani troops.
Armenia, which is allies with Russia and also home to a Russian military base, was accused by Azerbaijan of mortar hits and artillery barrage against its troops. Azerbaijan’s defense ministry said that their positions are being periodically fired to which their units are taking the required measures.
This entire conflict has taken place in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is mountainous and generally falls under the international territory of Azerbaijan, but a huge majority of the population of the area comprises ethnic Armenians who have resented the Azeri rule for a very long time.
