According to JNU’s director of admissions Jayant K. Tripathi, CU-CET will reduce the burden of students across the country in taking several entrance examinations.
Central Universities: Common Entrance Test (CU-CET) is an all-India entrance test held on a university level that ensures the admissions of students into various graduate and postgraduate courses.
In 2010, the test was conducted in seven central universities of India to eligibility for 41 studies, including graduate, postgraduate, and other integrated courses.
After Delhi University approves of the Central Universities — Common Entrance Test (CU-CET), one of the deemed central universities of India, Jawaharlal Nehru University, has agreed to implement CU-CET from the next academic session.

With several meetings, the board paved the way for CU-CET conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The Academic Council meeting was held online, and according to the JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA), many professors were deliberately muted during the session.
However, JNU professors alleged that whether or not to conduct the CET was not discussed democratically. JNU Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar cited taking this critical decision on his own without consulting the associate professors and students.
One hundred eleven college members asked the administration to send the CU-CET proposal again for further discussion.
As this is a matter that requires lengthy deliberation, given the interdisciplinary nature of JNU’s programs of study, the AC should refer to the agenda item for discussion at the level of the school and center.
Delhi University and CET
The Delhi University accepted the CET on December 17, 2022, by releasing a notice to change the admission process from merit-based to a standard entrance test plus merit.
The university confirmed that from 2022 the admission would be conducted based on 50% cumulative best four of class 12 and 50% of the CET.
Delhi University thinks that despite organizing the CET, the university will choose Delhi University Entrance Test (DU-ET). DU Vice-Chancellor said that the test would be divided into two sections; the first section will comprise the aptitude test, familiar to everyone.
The second part of the test will have many combinations and options.
CONS & PROS
Many students and professors asserted that the new model would make it hard to change their course because the entrance tests are subject-specific. This issue must be discussed as it will make the process all the more complicated.
At the same time, many welcome it with a positive view saying that this mode will give hope to the students who underperformed in class 12. CET judges a student’s aptitude with several analytical and reasoning questions, which can mark the end of the rote-learning era.
Professors argued with the emergence of CU-CET, many coaching centers for the preparation of the same would also emerge with the excessive burden. Students with a poor background will not be able to meet the ends.
Like the Central University of Rajasthan has maintained the CU-CET, other central universities will. According to some students who appeared in the Rajasthan CET (2020), the exams had many calculations, but they managed to complete them on time.
Though traveling from home to the center during the pandemic was scary, they attended the exam. Maintaining the covid protocol, the center’s sustained the practice of social distancing.
Central Universities like DU and JNU will also adhere to this new mode of admission, making the admission process more transparent.
The concerns like enrollment of excessive students who scored well in CU-CET and shifting the subject should be adequately discussed. Before the commencement of this CU-CET, a program providing counseling to the students must be adopted because it will be the student’s first attempt at CU-CET.
