Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema, the Islamic body is now seeking a ban on bhajans across the regional schools of J&K. This was announced just days after the former chief minister- Mehbooba Mufti made remarks regarding students getting forced to sing bhajans. The same Islamic body, Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) has urged the government and the education department of state to stop several practices like ‘singing bhajans and Surya Namaskara’ as it is now hurting the religious sentiments of residing Muslims. MMU acts as a merger for around 30 religious and Islamic educational institutions in the state of Kashmir.
Mehbooba Mufti, chief of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed that Muslim students were reportedly forced to sing bhajans in their respective schools and BJP was pushing its Hindutva agenda in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. As per the official government order, the schools from September 13th were asked to recite an ‘all faith prayer’ which goes like “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, Ishwar Allah tero naam”.
The recitation of this particular song was a part of a series of activities that were made in respect of Mahatma Gandhi and his 153rd birth anniversary.
Mehbooba Mufti tweeted a video on her handle in which kids of Kulgam were singing the same bhajan. Her tweet said “Jailing religious scholars, shutting down Jama Masjid & directing school kids here to sing Hindu hymns exposes the real Hindutva agenda of GOI in Kashmir. Refusing these rabid dictates invites PSA & UAPA. It is the cost that we are paying for this so-called ‘Badalta J&K’,”
