MP Congress spokesperson Abbas Hafeez called AAP and AIMIM “BJP’s B-team”, alleging that they were “active” by the BJP to “divide Congress votes” as the ruling party feared defeat in the elections.
In Madhya Pradesh ruling BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) captured nearly 100 of the 133 municipalities in the first phase of urban local body elections and the main opponent, Congress won three mayoral seats.
And the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) won. And the AIMIM (Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen)– which debuted in the state civil election– opened its account and influenced the elections in a significant way.
In a state whose politics has always been bipolar involving the Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the AAP snatched a mayor’s seat from the saffron party, while the AIMIM, by picking up four corporate seats, proved to be a spoilsport for the Congress in Burhanpur mayoral.Â
The election enabled the BJP to squeeze in by dividing the votes.
In the election of Singrauli mayor, on the issue of free water, effective governance and corruption-free corporation, AAP’s Rani Agarwal defeated BJP’s Chandra Pratap Vishwakarma by 9,352 votes. AAP also managed to win 18 corporate seats in several municipal bodies.
