A group of researchers in china found a relationship between rates of stillborn babies and measures of fine particulate in the air
What is Stillbirth
Stillbirth is a condition where the baby is dead before the delivery or during the birthing process. All babies dying in the uterus after the week of 20, are also counted under stillbirth. The reason behind the miscarriage or the death of the fetus is usually known. It may be due to placental or umbilical cord abruption, high blood pressure as a result of an infection in the mother, or simply by cause of lifestyle changes. Birth of babies born with no heartbeat during the delivery can be resuscitated in most cases and 48% of them are normal to moderate damage.
Air pollution affecting babies
A bunch of scientists in China and a fellow researcher in the USA have found a correlation pattern between rates of stillbirth and the particulates in the air. Particulates are fine dust or dirt in the air which may be made of solid or liquid, which enters into human respiratory tracts via nostrils and causes health effects. The study reported in the Nature Communication done by the Department of Health Survey of USAID by crossing referring data was revealed.
Stillbirth raised in the Third world
Cross-referring statistics showed that stillbirth rates are high in the third world with India topping the list. And, India’s air particulate index is near the top which is 60.15 Ug/m3 while the safety guideline set by WHO is 5 Ug/m3. Thus, India’s air quality is at its worst and proportionately the home of 217000 stillbirths out of 25 million worldwide. The Health Department has clearly outlined the pattern of air pollutants burden on stillborn babies.
This Study can help pregnant mothers to keep themselves safe from harmful air particulates. It is best to wear an N95 mask every time they step out of the doors, only in the time of necessity. It is also important to use air infilters indoors for the safety of the mother and the baby.
Air has become the invisible enemy of humans causing various health disorders and leading to poor quality of life. It is high time for the government and everyone to not adhere to it and execute strict safety protocols.
