Ajinkya Rahane, who leads the West Zone team for the Duleep Trophy, would be eager to show off his hunger for runs after missing the Ranji Trophy knockouts in June
After more than three months as the captain of the West Zone team for the Duleep Trophy, which will be played in Chennai next month, Ajinkya Rahane is set to play in a competitive match.
Rahane has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in May while playing in the Indian Premier League. Rahane will be eager to demonstrate his hunger for runs after missing the Ranji Trophy knockouts in June.
Rahane is one of the eight Mumbai players who were selected for the West Zone. Former Indian pacer Salil Ankola serves as the chairman of the zonal selection committee, including India regulars Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur to make a comeback in domestic cricket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, a dependable Ranji player, and the all-around spin bowlers Shams Mulani and Tanush Kotian have also been rewarded with positions in the zonal squad. Mumbai lost to Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy finals match in the last season.
Rahul Tripathi of Maharashtra, who has spent the majority of the last three months traveling with India’s limited overs team, has also been urged to demonstrate his talent against the red cherry.
The squad was chosen on Thursday in Mumbai by the top selectors of each of the five state teams in the zone. According to reports, the Gujarat left-arm bowler Arzan Nagwaswalla, openers Priyank Panchal and Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Sarfaraz Khan, a middle-order batsman, will play against NZ A as a member of the India A team.
The selectors decided not to put his name in the West Zone squad as a result. For the previous two seasons, Khan has been a run machine on the home circuit. In the Ranji Trophy season, he scored over 900 runs and will play for India A in the four-day games against New Zealand A.
According to a source, Iyer won’t be a part of the India A team when they take on New Zealand A in Bangalore next month. Iyer has been included in the Indian team’s standby list for the Asia Cup.
Het Patel, a wicketkeeper-batsman from Gujarat, and all-arounder Chintan Gaja were also selected by the selectors. Chirag Jani of Saurashtra and Jaydev Unadkat, a left-arm pacer, has also been added to the lineup.
