Hurun India, a luxury research and publishing company, has released the Global Rich List for 2022, in collaboration with real estate firm M3M.
According to the 2022 Hurun global rich list, 249 of the world’s 3,381 billionaires are either Indian or of Indian ancestry. 219 of them live in India.
With a net worth of $103 billion, Ambani has not only become India’s richest man, but also Asia’s richest man, with a 24 percent increase in his fortune. The chairman of RIL was also named the ‘Richest Telecom Entrepreneur.’
According to the Hurun research, Ambani grew his inherited wealth from $10 billion in 2002 to $10 billion in 20 years.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group Over the last year, he added the most money ($49 billion) to his $81 billion net worth – nearly Rs 6,000 crore every week. He was crowned the ‘Richest Energy Entrepreneur’ in the world, coming in at number 12 on the global list.
“In the M3M Hurun Global List 2022, Gautam Adani, 59, is the largest gainer, having added USD 49 billion to his wealth last year,” M3M Hurun Global Rich List stated in a statement.
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla, Jeff Bezos, the executive chairman of Amazon, and Bernard Arnault, the CEO of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, are the world’s top three billionaires.
Shiv Nadar, a billionaire industrialist and philanthropist, was ranked 46th on the global rich list with a net worth of $28 billion. HCL Technologies’ Chairman Emeritus is the world’s third richest software and services billionaire. After TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, HCL Technologies became the fourth Indian IT giant to reach a market capitalization of Rs 3 lakh crore in August 2021.
During the Delta and Omicron scare, Serum Institute of India founder Cyrus S Poonawalla, dubbed the “Vaccine King,” saw a 41% increase in his wealth. He was also rated the world’s 55th richest healthcare billionaire, with a fortune of $26 billion.
ArcelorMittal Executive Chairman Lakshmi N Mittal, who has a net worth of $25 billion, is the world’s second richest metals and mining entrepreneur.
SP Hinduja ($23 billion) came in 67th place and Uday Kotak, the CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, was named the ‘World’s Third Richest Banker’ with a fortune of $16 billion.
Falguni Nayar, the founder of Beauty e-commerce platform Nykaa, is the wealthiest new entrant on the Hurun Global Rich List 2022 ($7.6 billion).
Byju Raveendran, the ed-tech unicorn’s CEO, was named the world’s third richest entrepreneur in the education industry, with a net worth of $3.3 billion. He joined the billionaires list two years ago.
India is home to the world’s wealthiest aviation billionaires. Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia of IndiGo Airlines are the wealthiest aviation billionaires, with net worth of $4.3 billion and $4.2 billion, respectively.
Nusli Wadia and the Britannia family are the richest biscuit manufacturers in the world, with a fortune of US$ 7.5 billion.
RK Damani and family ($23 billion), Aditya Birla’s Kumar Mangalam Birla and family ($18 billion), and Dilip Shanghvi and family ($18 billion) were among India’s top ten billionaires.
Uday Kotak, the MD of Kotak Mahindra Bank, is the ninth richest person in India, according to the press release. He won the “World’s third richest banker” title with a net worth of $16 billion.
Billionaire distribution in India
With 748 billionaires, the United States leads the list of countries with the most billionaires. China comes in second with 554 billionaires, followed by India with 145 billionaires.
Bangalore saw the biggest increase in the number of ultra-high net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) at 17.1 percent, followed by Delhi (12.4 percent) and Mumbai (10.1 percent) (9 percent).
Mumbai has the most UHNWIs (1596), with Hyderabad (467), Pune (360), Bangalore (352), Kolkata (257), Delhi (210), Chennai (160), and Ahmedabad following closely behind (121).
Over the last decade, Indian billionaires have added $700 billion to their total wealth, which is equal to Switzerland’s GDP and twice the GDP of the United Arab Emirates.
“According to the M3M Hurun Global Rich List for 2022, there are 3,381 billionaires in 69 countries, with 2,557 firms. The wealth of 2,071 people increased, with 490 of them being newcomers. There were 942 persons who lost money and 129 people who lost their employment as a result of the financial crisis. A total of 35 persons were killed. The wealth of 368 people did not change. The average age in the group is 64 years old “, as stated in the statement
Despite the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the prolonged Covid impact with many fresh waves, the total wealth of billionaires increased by 4% to $15.2 trillion, according to the research.
