Apple is cautioning users against sleeping with their iPhones while they’re being charged. This is due to the possibility of the devices, cables, and chargers becoming warm, which could lead to discomfort or potential injury if in prolonged contact with the skin.
Company issues warning in their latest edition manual, “Use common sense to avoid situations where your skin is in contact with a device or power adapter while it is running or connected to a power outlet for a long time. For example, do not sleep on a device, power adapter or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow or your body when they are connected to a power outlet.”
Concerns on charging phones while sleeping
Charging a phone next to the sleeping area has sparked concerns due to potential negative outcomes. Firstly, it can disrupt sleep patterns and quality by subjecting individuals to notifications, vibrations, and the glare of bright screens during the night. These interruptions have the capacity to detrimentally impact overall well-being by impeding restorative sleep.
Secondly, electromagnetic exposure has garnered attention, as some worry about prolonged contact with the electromagnetic fields emitted by devices while they charge. Nevertheless, scientific investigations have yet to definitively establish harmful effects stemming from these emissions at the levels commonly produced by smartphones.
Moreover, the generation of heat during phone charging poses a risk of burns and discomfort, particularly if the phone is nestled under pillows or blankets. While contemporary smartphones integrate safety mechanisms to counteract excessive heat, the potential for prolonged exposure to a warm device remains a concern, potentially leading to minor burns or discomfort.
Lastly, albeit rare, the chances of fire hazard looms. The charging process occasionally experiences malfunctions that, if occurring on a flammable surface like a bed, could conceivably result in a fire. Although infrequent, this possibility underscores the need for cautious charging practices.
In light of these concerns, it’s advised to exercise prudence when charging devices near sleep spaces, ensuring notifications are minimized, devices are properly ventilated, and charging is done on non-flammable surfaces. While the likelihood of encountering these issues is generally low, attentiveness to potential risks remains paramount.
