Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal unveils remodeled Phansi Ghar and Corona Warrior Memorial
Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s Chief Minister, said the 75th anniversary of Independence is a time to remember the martyrs as he unveiled a restored “Phansi Ghar” from British rule and a Corona Warriors Memorial on the grounds of the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday.
The 31 Corona warriors who perished during the pandemic had certificates presented to their families by the chief minister as well.
Speaking to the crowd, Kejriwal claimed that until the Speaker of the House discovered the execution room from the British era in the Delhi Assembly, no one knew it even existed.
The Speaker discovered a way to hang two people at once after picking the lock on a confined room. For our freedom, countless people have given their lives. Visit this “Phansi Ghar” and tell your friends about it, Kejriwal pleaded, so they can learn about those who gave their lives for the nation.
In addition, he dedicated the “Corona Warriors Memorial” in honor of the Covid heroes who gave their all for society during the pandemic, including medical professionals like doctors, nurses, paramedics, sanitation workers, and teachers.
The names of 31 individuals, as well as details about their duties and supreme sacrifices during the pandemic, are written on the Corona Warriors Memorial.
“Covid has been a source of contention for all of us for the past two years. During that moment, a lot of people saved lives without thinking about their safety. Such Corona Warriors have a memorial built here. I appreciate Ram Niwas Goel, the Assembly Speaker, for creating the memorial,” Kejriwal remarked.
He also said the Delhi government has given Rs 1 crore compensation to the family members of these 31 Corona warriors.
Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, and Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla along with several AAP MLAs and family members of Corona warriors attended the event. PTI AKM NSD NSD.
Discovery
The building was built in 1911; Delhi Assembly was used as Central Legislative Assembly after the capital of the country was shifted to Delhi from Kolkata in 1912
A British-era tunnel was discovered at the Delhi Legislative Assembly, and a renovated execution room will be opened to the public in 2022, as quoted the previous year.
Assembly speaker Niwas Goel told news agency PTI on Friday, “We will open the renovated British-era ‘Fansi Ghar’ (execution room) of revolutionaries and the tunnel for the public by January 26 next year or latest by August 15, 2022.”
This British-era tunnel was built when the capital was moved from Kolkata to Delhi in 1912, the Delhi Assembly served as the Central Legislative Assembly.
It was discovered in the Legislative Assembly in Delhi last year and a renovated execution room is due to open in 2022, as said the previous year.
The ‘Fansi Ghar’ (Execution Hall for Revolutionaries) and the tunnel will open to the public on January 26, according to Niwas Goel, speaker of the assembly.
These two places are open to visitors when the Delhi congregation is not in session. According to Goel, the tunnel was discovered in 2016. The recently dug tunnel connects the Delhi Assembly to the Red Fort, but its historical significance is unknown. There is a distance of 5-6 kilometers between the two.
Earlier in the day, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly told ANI: “When I became an MLA in 1993, there were rumors of a tunnel going here to the Red Fort and I tried to look up its history. But there was no clarity about it.”
The Delhi Legislative Assembly, used as the Central Legislative Assembly after the capital city changed from Calcutta to Delhi in 1912, became a court in 1926. The British used this tunnel to bring freedom fighters to justice.
“We will not renovate the tunnel or continue digging as this will not be possible as many construction activities such as the Metro Rail would have blocked its path. We will keep it as is and allow the public to see it said Goel.
