Opposition parties including the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the Delhi Commission for Women pulled up Gehlot for his remarks.
A disagreement has exploded over Ashok Gehlot’s (Chief Minister of Rajasthan) declaration that ever since the death punishment for rape was introduced, assault rape victims are being murdered by the accused to prevent them from giving proof.
Anti-parties as well as the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party as well as the New Delhi Commission for Women pulled up CM Ashok for his declaration.
Speaking on the sidelines of Congress’s protest against inflation in Delhi on Friday, Ashok Gehlot said: Ever since the criminals of the raping bunches will get the death penalty, after the Nirbhaya rape case, the killings have started happening a lot with the girls.
If the person who does the rape sees it, it will be lost against me tomorrow. CM Gehlot also added that is why the accused rape the girl’s child and even kill her.
I can see it in the news coming from all over the country, it is a very menacing tendency.
Rajendra Rathore (Deputy Leader of Opposition in Rajasthan and Bharatiya Janata Party MLA) said that this reflects the failure of CM Ashok Gehlot’s government to control rape occurrence in the state.
Narrating the comment as “unfortunate and shameful”, Rajendra said: “The chief minister Gehlot, who is also the leader of the home division, can’t run away from the failure of his government when it comes to rising rape incidents in the state.”
Know what Rajendra Rathod said
He said that the earlier government of the Bhartiya Janata Party in the state had provided for the death punishment against those who were accused of raping minors and CM Ashok was against it because of the failure of his government.
“The Chief Minister Gehlot instead of smashing the confidence of the rapists, (he) is repeatedly doing the work of raising confidence.
The query is, if the HM himself put the carpet for the Rapists, then what will be the police investigation? Rathod also dares Ashok to bring charges against the death punishment law.
Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal tweeted, “The amount of condemnation for this statement of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot will not be enough.
Today, repeated rapes of girls are occurring in the country. The law was enacted after much pain and hunger strike. Such statements by political leaders smash the confidence of every victim.
The job of the head is to give security to women and not to make useless declarations.”
Vinay Mishra (MLA of the Aam Aadmi Party and Rajasthan party in charge) said Gehlot’s statement would inspire rapists.
Following the reaction, Gehlot told reporters on Sunday that he stood by his remarks and had only spoken about the reality of what is happening in the country.
He also said that the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) tends to “spread untrue details in the media”.
Asked whether he felt the law needed to be changed, Gehlot said it was something that the Indian government and state governments should consider.
“Earlier there were not so many murders, maybe one or two. These days we hear that rape happens and the girl also dies,” he said.
