Voters predict the final electoral battle to play out between Channi and AAP’s Charanjit Singh
Many voters of the Chamkaur Sahib constituency in Punjab express their expectations for a clear victory for Chief Minister hailing from the Congress party, Charanjit Singh Channi.
Surinder Singh, a farmer from Bela Garhi village,
Expressed a conviction that Channi will win as he came out of the polling booth yesterday.
Surinder Singh pointed out that this election will be a difficult one to predict since, according to him, “four members of the family do not know about each other’s vote.”
Surinder Singh further pointed out that the showdown is expected to be between Channi and his namesake Dr. Charanjit Singh from the AAP fold.
Being the CM’s namesake, Dr. Charanjit Singh is also called “AAP wala Channi” by the people of the Chamkaur Sahib constituency.
Dr. Charanjit had contested from the AAP fold against CM Channi in 2017 but lost by a margin of 12,000 votes.
The BJP, BSP, and SSM compete against the Channi namesakes in this Assembly election.
CM Channi has found considerable support from Chamkaur Sahib since his home constituency.
An Anganwadi worker at Kajauli called Parvinder Kaur vouches that Congress’s CM Channi is the best candidate.
She said, “I got at least 100 people to vote for him. After all, he gave us cheaper electricity, enhanced our wages, and he is promising jobs.”
She also expressed concern over handing the state to “Delhi wallahs.” According to her, “AAP gave a lot of money to TV channels.
That is why there is so much noise about AAP. But people will vote for Channi. He has done so much work in 111 days.”
A tea-stall owner, Jaskaran Singh, seems to agree with Parvinder as he affirms that the CM kept working hard, forsaking sleep.
Rupinder Kaur claimed that she voted for Channi since he constructed a theme park while paying attention to road infrastructure.
Bhag Singh asserted, “Although it is difficult to defeat a CM candidate, why do you think Channi had to contest from Bhadaur also?”
Bahujan Samaj Party worker from Kalaran village also asserted that the showdown would inevitably be between the two Channis, from Congress and AAP.
On the other hand, AAP supporters believe Dr. Charanjit will be a “giant killer” and has a fair chance of winning this election.
According to the Election Commission, Punjab went to the polls yesterday with a commendable voter turnout of 65.32%.
The voting process turned out to be peaceful. Vote counting for this multi-cornered electoral battle is scheduled for March 10.
