Australia posted a total of 269 for eight, and rode over the host Kiwis in the 11th match of the Women’s World Cup.
Match Summary
AUS: 269/8 (50 overs)
NZ: 128 (30.2 overs)
A rough side on New Zealand as Australia trashed the hosts and ropes the match by 141 runs at Basin Reserve in Wellington on Sunday morning. New Zealand had won the toss and elected to bowl first. Australia was on the attacking side from the start as they displayed a powerful game against the Kiwis.
Ellyse Perry won the Player of the Match award after scoring 68 off 86. Asleigh Gardner’s impressive cameo of 48 runs in 18 balls had joined Tahlia McGrath’s (57 off 56) and another half-centurion to take Australia past 200 runs.
Australia’s batting side was quick enough to post 269 this morning, and they carried the same attitude throughout while defending the target with their cohesive attacking bowling effort.
Darcie Brown (3/22) was the highest wicket-taker from Australia to pick 3 wickets. While Amanda Jade Wellington (2/34), Gardner (2/15), Perry (1/18), McGrath (1/17) and Megan Schutt (1/22) bowled, the team from another end was balanced.
Perry and Beth Mooney (30) built a stable partnership of 57 runs in between. “It was nice to rebuild with Mooney. We built some momentum and finished well. “I thought it was a good wicket, but New Zealand bowled really well,” said Perry in the post-match presentation.
This win over New Zealand is their third consecutive win in the tournament, and with this, they displaced India and jumped to the top spot in the points table with 6 points.
The Kiwis handed an easy victory to the Aussies with falling wickets.
The New Zealand batters who were on the chase, and with falling wickets, this big total slowly appeared bigger and more difficult to achieve. The early loss of wickets was the prime reason for the Kiwis’ being unable to counter Australia’s bowling attack.
The opening pair of Rachel Haynes (30) and Alyssa Healy (15) built a 37 runs partnership in 9.5 overs. With the quick departure of skipper Meg Lanning (5) and Healy, the Australian bowling attack got stronger in the innings.
Lea Tahuhu picked up 3 wickets with the ball and scored 23 off 25 with the bat for New Zealand in the innings. However, Amy Satterthwaite was the top run scorer on the New Zealand batting side with 44 off 67, and the only other two batters, Katey Martin (19) and Suzie Bates (16), scored double digits for falling New Zealand.
After this match, New Zealand stands at fourth position with 4 points and a negative run rate due to a big margin loss. The Kiwis will be looking forward to a solid comeback in the next three league matches to qualify for the semifinals of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022.
