Aggression from Mainland China toward the island of Taiwan escalated greatly over the weekend. China considers the democratically governed island of Taiwan as its own territory and as ‘Taipei’. In its competition with the United States and South Korea, another demonstration of military capabilities was carried out by North Korea. This time in the form of a nuclear-capable drone that is underwater. The North Korean state news agency, KCNA reported on Saturday that the weapon is called “Haeil-2”. Almost a week after it unveiled another non-nuclear underwater drone called “Haeil-1”. The translation for the word Haeil is Tsunami. After previously stating that Finland will be joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), on Tuesday Finland officially joined the intergovernmental alliance.  The move comes under the pretence of the Russia-Ukraine war which has had lasting implications on the geopolitical situation of the entire European continent.  The invasion and undermining of the sovereignty of Ukraine furthered a pre-existing insecurity that is present in the European states. ASEAN ASEAN or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations has considered an initiative to dump the currencies it currently uses in Dollar, Yen, Pound, and Euro.  According to a briefing report released by ASEAN finance ministers and Central Bank Governors, the positives of doing this would be in the expansion of the current cross-border payment system. This would also allow the member states of ASEAN to use their local currencies for trade. NATO’s secretary general Jens Stolenberg mentioned his concern over the economic collapse in Tunisia. He stressed the preparedness of the alliance to help Tunisia if an economic collapse happens and that it will work to prevent the influx of thousands of new immigrants to European countries from Tunisian boats. OPEC countries have made the decision to cut their output by 1.2 million barrels per day. OPEC countries came to this decision in conjunction with non-OPEC countries like Russia. The decision comes amid a global supply gut and falling oil prices. The oversupply of oil has plagued the international market and in turn has caused oil prices to fall. Saudi Arabia, the coalition’s largest oil producer will make by far the biggest cuts, more than 500,000 barrels per day. The battle of Bakhmut has been the deadliest and longest in the Russo-Ukraine war. Recently, the Russian side made major advancements on the city while Ukraine shifted its attention elsewhere and started stockpiling resources for an offensive in the spring. On Monday, 20th March, European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated that Tunisia’s social or economic collapse is a plausible future. On March 10, a deal brokered by the People’s republic of China restored the severed ties between Iran and Saudi Arabia more than seven years later.
