Nearly all sequences reported to GISAID are of the Omicron variant of concern, which isÂ
currently the dominant variant circulating worldwide. Every one of Omicron’s many sublines is being monitored by the WHO and its partners. BA.1, BA.1.1 (or Nextstrain clade 21K) and BA.2 are the most common (or Nextstrain clade 21L). Compared to BA.1, the proportion of sequences designated BA.2 has risen globally in recent weeks, though it is reported that the global circulation of all variants is decreasing in circulation.
Reason for Concern:
Around 86% of all sequenced cases now belong to BA.2, according to the World Health Organization. Compared to other sub-variants, like BA.1 and BA.1.1, it is more easily passed on from person to person. There is, however, a good deal of evidence that it is less likely to cause a serious illness.
Countries affected:
BA.2 is also less responsive to vaccines. Protective measures are restored by a booster injection, particularly for preventing hospitalisation and death. According to UK Health Security Agency data,
As a result of BA.2, China and European countries like Germany and the United Kingdom have seen a rise in demand. The concern is also growing in the United States about the possibility of a new wave.
