Representatives of more than 200 countries will gather for the 26th U.N. Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, from 1 to Nov. 12 in Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss new targets for cutting or curbing emissions growth climate change.
Bangladesh says it will present its climate prosperity plan to lessen the effects of climate change on the economy at the forthcoming U.N. climate talks in Glasgow.
The project visualizes boosting renewable energy, making agriculture more resistant to climate shocks, and finding natural solutions, such as restoring mangroves to protect coasts from cyclones.
The densely populated South Asian nation is particularly vulnerable to flooding, extreme weather, and farmland loss to rising sea levels. Bangladesh says it will encourage other countries prone to disasters to draft their plans.
Abul Kalam Azad said that Bangladesh could still make the Ganges River Delta that dominates much of the country prosperous with support from abroad.
Representatives of more than 200 countries will gather for the 26th U.N. Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, from 1 to Nov. 12 in Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss new targets for cutting or curbing emissions growth to climate change.
Officials from the 48 countries that make up the Climate Vulnerable Forum said that the recent U.N. science report stressed the urgent need to ensure that global warming doesn’t increase beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit). Scientists say that goal is at risk unless emissions drop soon.
What is COP26?
COP26 is the next annual U.N. climate change conference. COP stands for Conference of the Parties, and the summit will be attended by the countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a treaty that came into force in 1994.
This year it is the 26th COP summit and will be hosted in partnership between the U.K. and Italy.
COP26 will be the most prominent summit the U.K. has ever hosted, with around 30,000 attendees expected if it goes ahead as an entirely physical event.
Many people see it as the most significant climate event since the 2015 Paris Agreement – when all the signatories to the UNFCC agreed to keep temperatures well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
COP26 is critical because it’s the first moment when countries must set out more ambitious goals for ending their contribution to climate change under the Paris Agreement.
Why did Bangladesh Launch this Programme?
In Bangladesh, most of 160 million people are packed into low-lying areas along the Bay of Bengal. This area is considered prone to extreme weather, flooding, and loss of farmland due to rising ocean levels. Thus, to mitigate these challenges, Bangladesh has revealed its plan.
How Will Climate Change Impact the Economy?
Bangladesh has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia. Its GDP had increased to $305 billion in 2019, from $6.2 billion in 1972. Some of the experts expect that GDP will double in size by 2030. However, climate change might reverse this trend.
The country is at the risk of displacement due to sea-level rise, heat waves, severe floods, and cyclones.
