Armed robbers robbed and attacked FC Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the early hours of Monday morning at his residence in the beach resort of Castelldefels.
According to media accounts, the thieves physically beat the player and his wife before forcing them to unlock a safe so they could steal jewellery.
Both the footballer and his wife, Alysha Behague, reportedly had minor wounds, according to the Spanish daily El Pais. The robbery’s specifics have not been confirmed by 33-year-old Aubameyang.
More information is provided by the local radio station RAC 1, which states that Aubameyang and his wife were made to lie on the floor of their house for at least an hour while the robbers looked for valuables.
The 33-year-old was also physically abused during the attack, which was carried out by at least four persons, before the thieves fled in a white Audi A3, according to Xinhua. The police were subsequently contacted by Aubameyang’s wife to report the robbery.
Aubameyang’s home in Castelldefels, a neighbourhood in Barcelona’s Metropolitan Area, has experienced burglaries twice in the past two months, but the player and his family were not there during the first incident, according to police.
The footballer and his family were allegedly threatened with weapons on Monday by four hooded guys who burst into his home. Aubameyang and his wife were assaulted, and they were made to open a safe so that jewellery could be taken.
In Europe’s top division, robberies have happened before to players. Joao Cancelo, a defender for Manchester City, was assaulted at his house in England in December, while Nicolas Otamendi, a defender for Benfica, was attacked at his home in Portugal during a heist.
According to authorities, during games, the houses of Gerard Pique, Ansu Fati, Jordi Alba, Samuel Umtiti, and Coutinho in Barcelona have been looted.
Players in Madrid, Seville, and Valencia have reported similar experiencing events.
This heist occurs amid rumours that Aubameyang, who only joined the team in January, may leave Barcelona as the team tries to save costs on salaries. Aubameyang joined Barcelona in February last year after his contract with Arsenal mutually ended.
