“In regard to the remarks made by Udhayanidhi Stalin, he is a junior. From my perspective, I’m not entirely clear on why and on what grounds he made those comments. I strongly believe that every religion deserves equal respect,” said Mamata Banerjee on Monday evening, just hours after her party’s spokesperson labelled the comments as “unfortunate.”
She continued, “I hold deep respect for the people of Tamil Nadu and South India. My humble request to them is to respect all religions because each one has its own unique sentiments.”
Highlighting the principles of “Unity in Diversity” and India’s inclusive secularism, Ms Banerjee emphasized, “I have great respect for Sanatana Dharma, and we draw wisdom from the Vedas… We have many priests (purohits), and our state government provides them with pensions. We have numerous temples across the country. We visit temples, mosques, and churches.”
Mr. Stalin’s statement that “Sanatana Dharma is like malaria and dengue and must be eradicated” has provided the BJP with ammunition ahead of several upcoming assembly elections.
