In an investigation following the devastating Bengaluru floods that occurred last week, names of many big firms have popped up
who is responsible for allegedly encroaching upon 700 storm drains that led to flooding in some parts of the city.Â
The firms in this list include giants like Wipro, Prestige, Bagmane Tech Park, Columbia Asia Hospital, and Divyashree Villas.
While the demolition of encroachments has been occurring on many properties following the flooding, the big firms are yet to be taken accountable.Â
Some engineers said that they are moving slowly on taking action as there are some delays on the ground.Â
Meanwhile, demolition efforts are in full swing across many residential and commercial establishments.
An example of this can be seen at the demolition drive of the Nalapad Academy of International School in east Bengaluru, which belongs to the Youth Congress leader Mohammad Nalapad.
The Congress, which is the current opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, has been the biggest critic of the BJP-led government over the floods that have occurred.Â
The engineers who were responsible for clearing the encroachment said that it was a lapse on the part of the revenue department, because of whom the encroachment went unnoticed.Â
In the eastern part of Bengaluru, a boundary wall of a four-story building was also demolished while the residents were inside.
The owner of the building claimed that they had all the proper permissions and were not informed about the demolition beforehand.
The engineer who oversaw the demolition denied this. There has been a lot of talk about how illegal encroachments have led to this flood in Bengaluru.
It also displays that India is in strict need of a proper scheme of urban planning that rids its cities of haphazard building codes.
