The nationwide strike called by a joint forum of central trade unions against various government policies is on its second day, and banking, public transportation, and other services are expected to be impacted again in areas of the country on Tuesday.Â
Due to the nationwide strike that began on Monday, a bandh-like situation was reported in at least eight states: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, Haryana, and Jharkhand, according to the statement of joint forum of central trade unions. Â
While the second day of the strike is expected to see certain banking and transportation services disrupted, essential services such as healthcare, energy, and fuel supply may remain untouched like Day1. Â
Educational institutions and public offices are also expected not to be impacted by the strike. However, Renowned Universities like Rama Devi, Utkal, and Sambalpur University in Odisha have postponed examinations due to this strike.Â
Top points on the two-day Bharat Bandh as it enters Day 2:
- The Bharat Bandh, which began on Monday, resulted in a bandh-like situation in eight states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Assam, Haryana, and Jharkhand, according to the joint forum of central trade unions.Â
- Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh all held agitations, according to the forum.Â
- Banking and transportation services were partially disrupted in various states on Day 1 of the strike, and the same is expected on Day 2.Â
- Due to a pan-India strike announced by united trade unions, heavy traffic was seen at metro railway stations in Chennai as state-run Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses remained off the road. Long lines for tickets were especially long at Koymabedu station. Due to the lack of plying buses, Koyambedu, Triplicane, Nungambakkam, and other major stations were overcrowded.Â
- Sikkim’s security personnel went on strike. Workers in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Jammu & Kashmir also joined, according to the forum. Around 50,000 personnel picketed central government offices in 300 locations across Tamil Nadu, income tax department employees also joined the nationwide protest. As per the statement.
- Haryana’s public transportation services were disrupted on Monday as Roadways employees joined a two-day nationwide strike. Commuters had a difficult time getting around because bus services were suspended at various Haryana Roadways depots. As part of the strike, highway workers demonstrated at numerous depots across the state. “In all the depots’ bus services have been suspended,” said Sarbat Singh Punia, head of a joint front of 10 unions representing roads employees.Â
- In several parts of West Bengal, normal life was affected. Protesters blocked roads and prevented train movement at various railway stations on the Howrah and Sealdah sections, disrupting transportation in a few regions. Officials from the railways, on the other hand, indicated there had been no serious disruptions so far.Â
- According to the forum, many employees in banks and insurance companies did not report to work, while those in the coal, steel, postal, oil, copper, and telecom industries also joined the strike. Workers in the electricity department went on strike in all states, including Maharashtra, where the government had invoked ESMA.Â
- Kerala state unions went on strike at midnight on March 28. Employees of the railways and the defence sectors are said to have organized protests in over a thousand locations around the country, as per the statement. Road and train blockades were staged in various parts of the country by Anganwadi, ASHA, mid-day meal and domestic employees, construction, beedi and agricultural workers, and hawkers-vendors.Â
- A few members of Parliament supported the protest. When the Rajya Sabha deferred until midday because of an interruption in proceedings by the Opposition over rising petroleum prices and trade union rallies, Rajya Sabha MPs from the Left and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) held a protest at the Gandhi statue.Â
