In the early morning of Friday, around 4 a.m., Punjab police stormed into the residence of BJP leader, Tajinder Pal Bagga. The arrest was made under an allegation made by the AAP leader, Sunny Singh Ahluwalia, in Mohali, where he accused Bagga of making derogatory statements against Kejriwal on Twitter. However, the case was registered last month in Mohali.
Tajinder Pal Bagga’s father, Preet Pal Bagga, filed a complaint at the nearby police station. He claimed that 10-15 unidentified people stormed into our house, punched him in the face, and took away his son forcefully. When he asked them to at least let him tie his turban, they did not even allow him to do so. Furthermore, when Preet Pal Bagga tried to get his phone to record the incident, they pushed him and snatched away his phone.
Tajinder’s father also stated that earlier, two policemen came and visited their family. The Baggas offered them tea, when suddenly 10–15 people stormed into the house and dragged Tajinder Bagga out of the house without letting him cover his head. “When I tried to make a video of the incident, they snatched my mobile, punched me on my face, and forced me to sit down,” he said.
However, while crossing the Haryana border, the police force was stopped in Kurukshetra by Haryana police. Thus, he disabled Punjab Police from taking him beyond Haryana.
Delhi Police counteracts
The Delhi police claim that the Punjab Police have abducted Tajinder Pal Bagga. The Punjab Police came in civil attire and, without informing the local police station, they arrested Bagga.
When Punjab Police realised later that they must follow the protocol, they sent their DSP to Janakpuri Police Station to fulfil the formalities. However, up until that point, Punjab Police had left off alongside Bagga. The Janakpuri Police Station made the DSP from Punjab wait for several hours before lodging the formalities.
As Delhi Police filed a case for the abduction of Tajinder Pal Bagga by the Punjab Police, Haryana Police came into action. Thus, in Kurukshetra, they stopped the vehicle in which Bagga was sitting and took the Punjab Police to Pipli.
On the other hand, the Punjab Police termed what Haryana Police did as “illegal”. Further, Punjab Police took to the high court against the illegal detention of their fellow men in Kurukshetra.
Why was Bagga arrested by the Punjab Police?
Punjab Police claim that Bagga is booked for making derogatory statements, promoting animosity and criminal intimidation. The FIR was lodged in Mohali by the AAP leader, Sunny Ahluwalia.
It all started when Tajinder Pal Bagga was tweeting against Kejriwal’s statements in the Delhi Vidhan Sabha. Tajinder Pal Bagga warned Kejriwal to apologise for declaring the struggles of Kashmiri Hindus as a lie. Bagga also said that if Kejriwal does not provide an apology, he won’t spare him.
Later, Bagga was booked under IPC sections, including 153-A for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place, etc.; 505 for publishing or circulating rumours or reports; and 506 for criminal intimidation.
Further, Punjab police also stated that they had sent several notices to Tajinder Pal Bagga to present himself at Mohali police station. But, when he did not show up, they had to take him by force.
