In the current Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the BSP received only one seat, their lowest ever tally.
Mayawati criticised the media’s “casteist agenda” and stated her party would boycott TV discussions two days after the Bahujan Samaj Party scored its lowest ever tally of only one seat in the current Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.
Mayawati claimed the media’s attitude hindered the party’s electoral chances in a series of tweets.
“The media’s work to destroy the Ambedkarite BSP movement during the UP-assembly elections by adopting casteist animosity and a nasty attitude toward their masters is not concealed from anyone,” Mayawati stated on Twitter.
Mayawati claimed on Friday that the media’s relentless campaign portraying the BSP as the BJP’s “B squad” drove Muslims and anti-BJP supporters away from the party. The 66-year-old leader stated that the UP-election results were contrary to the BSP’s expectations.
“The election results in Uttar Pradesh are not in line with the BSP’s predictions. It should not be a source of discouragement for us. Instead, we should learn from it, reflect on it, and press on with our party’s effort in order to return to power “she stated.
She mentioned the BJP and the Congress as examples of parties that built on their respective party bases after losing elections and went on to form governments in Uttar Pradesh.
Dooms Day for BSP
The BJP was able to retain power in Uttar Pradesh by winning 255 of the state’s 403 constituencies, with a vote share of 41.29 percent.
This is the first time in 37 years that a political party (the BJP) has been able to keep power in Uttar Pradesh after serving a complete term. In 1985, Narayan Dutt Tiwari was elected to the state legislature for the second time in a row.
Notably, when Rajnath Singh was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2000, the BJP came to power but could not keep it for even a year. Since then, the BJP has been unable to gain control, and the state has been divided between the Samajwadi Party and the BSP till 2017.
