On 18th June Sunday afternoon around 1.30pm local time in Mexico one of the strongest earthquake has hit recording the magnitude of 6.6 now reduced to 6.4 and it have not received any tsunami warnings till now. According to the Indian Time Standard (IST), it is said to have occurred on Monday (19th June 2024) around 2:00:20 a.m.

DETAILS ABOUT THE EARTHQUAKE:
PLACE OF OCCURRENCE:
The earth quake which occurred was about 10km of depth, took place around 1.30pm of local time on Sunday, was centred below the Pacific Ocean, between San Jose` del Cabo on the tip of the Baja California and Mazatl`an in Sinaloa state.
Mexico’s National Seismic Service stated that the earthquake took place in 122km east of San Jose` del Cabo.
MAGNITUDE OF EARTHQUAKE 6.4 OR 6.3?

Mexico’s seismological agency put the preliminary Magnitude at 6.4 while the U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude slightly lower, at 6.3.
But both the measurements were down from an earlier reading of 6.6.

The IRIS at magnitude of 6.6. and The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.0.
The quake struck about 10km (6.2 miles) below the sea bed.
Since the magnitude has been recorded by various agencies the report which comes subsequently after the previous one seems to be more accurate.
NO THREAT TO THE U.S. COSTAL LINES:
The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed that there’s no threat to U.S. coastlines.
NO SERIOUS DAMAGES OR INJURIES WERE REPORTED:
“At this time, no damages have been reported in the areas where it was felt”- said the Mexico’s National Civil Defence Coordination to the Associated Press.
The USGS from it’s models suggests that the earthquake was too far from land to have caused a significant impact, but an estimated 1.9 million people might have felt a light shaking.
PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE EXPERIENCED A LIGHT SHAKING:
Based on the initial seismic data, the earthquake was probably felt by many people who are living in and around the area of epicentre. It should not have caused the significant impact like the previous earthquakes in mexico.
In Las Dos Ballenas located from the epicentre, and San Jose` del Cabo 144 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.

Mexico has a strong history with the earthquakes due to the location in which it is situated.
The country is home to numerous active volcanoes, so it is prone to earthquakes.

2017 EARTHQUAKE (7.1 MAGNITUDE):
On 20th Sept 2017 a 7.1 magnitude of earthquake occurred killing atleast 217 people.
Luckily, this earthquake did not have any significant impact.
