Chandigarh, The NID Foundation and Chandigarh University on Saturday formed the Guinness World Record for the formation of the “World’s Largest Human Image of a Waving National Flag” when as many as 5,885 students from Chandigarh University and other schools and colleges along with the volunteers of the NID Foundation of the UT to mark the occasion of India’s 75th Independence Day at an international level.
In total, approximately 25,000 people—including children and Chandigarh residents—filled the air with their patriotism, including Punjab Governor and Chandigarh UT Administrator Banwarilal Purohit and Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture. Meenakshi Lekhi, Dharam Pal, Advisor to the Administrator, Chandigarh UT; Sarabjit Kaur, Mayor of Chandigarh; Parveer Ranjan, DGP Chandigarh UT, Chief Patron of NID; S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chancellor of Chandigarh University; Prof. Himani Sood, Founder of NID Foundation; and other senior officials of the UT administration.
The guinness record was validated by Swapnil Dangarikar, an authorized Guinness World Records adjudicator who was present at the occasion.In today’s event, NID Foundation and Chandigarh University smashed the previous world record for the largest human picture of a waving national flag set by GEMS Education in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and established a new record.
In 2017, The UAE set a guinness record with 4130 persons for the largest human representation of a waving national flag. However, the official claimed that India had easily smashed the record. Dangarikar also congratulated Banwarilal Purohit, governor of Punjab and UT administrator, and S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, chief patron of the NID Foundation. He also gave them copies of the GWR certificate.
Speaking at the event, Banwarilal Purohit said Chandigarh had sent a powerful message to the entire world on the occasion of the 75th celebration of India’s Independence Day with the establishment of a global guinness record by Chandigarh University and NID Foundation.
Six NGOs were honored at the event with Karam Yodha awards for exemplary social contribution in their respective sectors. These included Prof. (Dr.) Surinder Pal Singh Oberoi represented Sarbat Da Bhala NGO. Gurmeet Singh Sodi represented Sant Baba Kartar Singh Ji Bhairon Majra, Harjeet Singh Sabbarwal for Tera Hi Tera Mission Hospital, Asha Katoch, MD and CEO for Developing Indigenous Resources India, Vineet Joshi for Joshi Foundation, and Pooja Bakshi for Woman and Child Welfare Society.
Union Minister Lekhi on the occasion conveyed, “I do not believe that we got Independence without any shield, as it is often said. Various people like Bhagat Singh sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country.’
“Some people, for their politics, call Bhagat Singh a terrorist, but his offering to the nation’s freedom is unforgettable. He sacrificed his life at a very young age,” she said while attacking Sangrur MP Simranjeet Singh for his alleged ‘terrorist’ remarks on Bhagat Singh.
“Thousands of our youth gathered here to form the waving image of our tricolor, there could not be a better view in the entire country than what we witnessed here today. Congratulations to the NID Foundation, Chandigarh University and most importantly the students, who made this dream of mine come true.”
Speaking on the occasion, S. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chief Patron of NID Foundation, and Chancellor of Chandigarh University also congratulated the participants and said that the historic formation of the national flag aptly celebrates the spirit of India’s 75th Independence Day under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Feeling proud to be a part of the guinness record event, one of the students expressed his contentment by saying, “I am proud that I am a part of this historic event, celebrating the independence of a land that has given us a unique identity and is associated with proud heritage and values.”
Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of India’s people, culture and achievements.
The guinness record envisages inspiring Indians everywhere to hoist the national flag at their homes. The aim of the programme is to make the relationship with the national flag a more personal one rather than just keeping it formal or institutional.
The idea behind the initiative is to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of the people and promote awareness about the tricolor.
