The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has penned a letter to a high-ranking police official, urging them to take appropriate measures against individuals who have violated the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act-Junagadh clash.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has proactively acknowledged the recent altercation between a group of individuals and a police official in Junagadh district, Gujarat. Prompted by a video clip shared by news agency ANI, the NCPCR has expressed apprehensions regarding the involvement of numerous minors in the clash, where stones were thrown at the police. Consequently, the commission has issued a letter to the district’s superintendent of police, urging swift action to be taken within a seven-day timeframe.
In the letter, the NCPCR stated that they have taken proactive notice, as per Section 13(1)(j) of the CPCR Act, 2005, of a video circulating on Twitter. The video highlights a significant outbreak of violence in Junagadh. The NCPCR pointed out that the video clearly shows the involvement of numerous underage children who were observed engaging in stone pelting and participating in the mob.
The clash broke out after the civic body initiated an anti-encroachment drive, which included a mosque located near Mejevadi Gate. This unfortunate incident resulted in the loss of one life, and a minimum of five police personnel sustained injuries.
Concerning the incident near Majevadi Darwaja Dargah on Friday night, where approximately 500-600 protesters engaged in stone pelting and clashed with the police, at least 174 individuals have been apprehended. Officials stated that the police resorted to the use of tear gas shells and baton charges to bring the situation under control.
The commission claimed that Sections 83(2) and 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, in addition to other applicable provisions of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, have been violated.
Section 83(2) of the Juvenile Justice Act stipulates that adults or adult groups who exploit children, either individually or as part of a gang, to engage in unlawful activities can face rigorous imprisonment for up to seven years, as well as a fine of up to ₹5 lacks.
According to Section 75 of the aforementioned act, individuals can be held accountable for subjecting children to assault, abandonment, abuse, or intentional neglect, resulting in punitive measures.
One fatality in Junagadh clashes following the dargah’s notification during the encroachment drive
A minimum of 174 individuals have been apprehended concerning the incident, which involved approximately 500-600 demonstrators engaging in stone pelting and confronting the police near Majevadi Darwaja Dargah on Friday night.
Violent clashes broke out in Junagadh city, Gujarat, resulting in the unfortunate death of one individual and injuries sustained by at least five police personnel. The clashes ensued after the civic body issued a notice to a dargah as part of its anti-encroachment campaign, as per officials’ statements on Saturday.
Around 174 individuals have been apprehended concerning the incident where an estimated 500-600 protesters engaged in stone pelting and clashed with the police near Majevadi Darwaja Dargah on Friday night. Officials reported that to regain control of the situation, the police resorted to using tear gas shells and conducting baton charges.
On June 14, officials stated that the Junagadh municipal corporation issued a notice to the administration of Majewadi Dargah, requesting them to present the necessary legal documentation about the ownership of the land within five days.
The deputy superintendent of police, accompanied by a police team, made efforts to persuade the protesters to remove the blockade. However, the protesters turned hostile and launched an attack on the police, throwing stones at them at approximately 10:15 pm. The superintendent of police further mentioned that the mob also set a vehicle ablaze.
