The latest version of Cinderella is all set to premiere on September 3. A musical-themed movie will present a different side to Cinderella’s life that fits the reality of the present.
Although we’ve lost count on the number of Cinderella movies produced and watched in the years, every version has a unique touch of its own.
The latest version stars Camila Cabello as the princess, Idina Menzel as her cruel stepmother, and James Corden is also a part of this stellar cast.
Departing from the traditional
The original story of Cinderella narrates the tale of a young lady named “Cinderella” who her stepmother and step-sisters mistreat. She is forbidden from attending a ball where women attend to seek potential marriage proposals.
However, a fairy godmother appears and provides her with a gown, a glass slipper and an entire entourage with her magic to help Cinderella go to the ball. She meets the Prince, and it is love at first sight.
Cinderella mistakenly leaves one of her glass slippers behind, which later comes in possession of the Prince. The Prince begins to search for his love, going from door to door to see if the slipper fits.
The two finally meet each other, and they live happily ever after in the palace. This is the fairytale we have all grown up watching.
Since then, there have been many modern adaptations to this tale like Another Cinderella Story, A Cinderella Story, A Cinderella Story: Once upon a song, to name a few.
This Camila Cabello starrer is no different. A musical-themed movie, this modern adaptation will present another side to Cinderella’s life that fits the reality of the present.
A Genderless fairy, an Independent Cinderella
As Vogue mentions in their article, this upcoming movie is a “High Fashion Fairytale”. Camila’s character Ella loves to design and make her clothes and wishes to become a businesswoman.
Unlike the previous adaptations, this Cinderella has a dream she wants to chase. Even after meeting the Prince and developing affection towards him, she is not ready to compromise her future as she is seen working hard towards her dream in the trailer.
To quote a line from the trailer, Ella says, “I have dreams that I have to chase”. It is a version aimed at inspiring young girls and boys alike to work towards their goals like Ella and find their voice to support them.
The Mercedes Benz “Dressed for a dream” live-streamed fashion show will showcase the dresses designed for the movie on August 28 2021.
Cabello and Mirojnick – the costume designer for the film- who are ambassadors for Mercedes Benz, aim to project and normalise the idea of “Ella” as an everyday girl by showcasing models wearing the costumes; that one does not require to fit in any criteria to become Cinderella, and anyone can be her own “Ella”.
This is the overall resounding message the film wishes to send, with the journey of self-discovery and empowerment being the major key points.
Another aspect of the movie to watch out for is the infamous “ball scene”. Unlike the older version, where women compete against each other for a guy, the Prince, played by “ Nicholas Galitzine” throws a party to find a bride.
The scene will comprise women from different parts of the world, promoting cultural representation and expanding the notion of princesses beyond Western countries.
Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe is also confirmed to be a part of this scene that unites women from different cultural backgrounds.
Each princess will represent her own country and so prepare your eyes to look out for cameos of women from other parts of the world! As Mirojnik says, “ the ball is about bringing the community together,” which is a message that needs to be amplified in a world divided by caste, race and gender.
The film has also changed the concept of attaching the role of the fairy godmother to a woman.
The movie will feature a genderless fairy named Fab G, played by Billy Porter, thus breaking the gender barriers and societal constructions of gender.
When it releases and where to watch
Cinderella is ultimately a movie aimed at breaking gender stereotypes and sharing a social message of independence, equality and self-discovery.
As movies begin to adapt to the everyday progress and changes of the modern world, everyone is eager to see how this upgraded version of the classic fairytale will incorporate such social developments and present it to the audience. It is all set to release on September 3 2021, on Amazon Prime Video.
