Indian Men’s Hockey team loses to Australia in the finals of Commonwealth Games 2022 after a humiliating loss of 0-7
Australia defeated India with a 0-7 score to clinch their 7th consecutive gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Monday. The Australian team dominated the game from the start and goals from Tom Wickham, Blake Govers, Fynn Ogilvie, Nathan Ephraums and Jacob Anderson helped them to maintain their dominance in the tournament since 1998.Â
India entered the final after winning from South Africa by 3-2. Australia also won all four pool matches and came to a clash in finals after beating England 3-2. This was the third finals played by the Indian team in the tournament’s history and notably everytime it lost to Australia.Â
The Australian team took control in their hands within 12 minutes and Blake Grovers scored their first goal. Maintaining a tight defence, Nathan Ephraums scored another goal and ended the first quarter at a score of 0-2.Â
With the beginning of the second quarter Indian team decided to fight and PR Sreejesh made some good saves to eliminate the threats. Indians started relying on passing the ball quickly but none of the tactics worked. It was a smart goal again by Jacob Anderson.Â
India received another shock when Manpreet Singh had to walk away mid-way due to discomfort in the shoulders. Before India could think of a comeback Tom Wickham scored the 4th goal for his team. Jacob Anderson scored another goal making it impossible for India to contest. Australia was leading by 0-5 at the end of the first half of the match.
The Indian had already lost its pace in the third quarter and couldn’t even possess the ball. Australia ends the quarter with a goal by Nathan Ephraums and scores again with the beginning of fourth quarter. Australia was leading by 0-7 when India started to pace up. Gurjant Singh did a good attack but Australian defence was stronger and the scoreline remained the same.
With the same attack and defence Australia won its seventh medal in Commonwealth Games and India settled for silver again.
