The fifth phase of the UP assembly election concluded on Sunday. Polls were conducted in 12 districts with 692 candidates for 61 assembly seats in the fray.
Approximately 54% voter turnout was recorded until 5 p.m., with 2.24 crore people casting their vote in the fifth phase of the UP election.
The highest was recorded in the Chitrakoot district with 59.64 percent and the lowest at 50.25 percent in the Pratapgarh district. The voting started at 7 a.m. and continued till 6 in the evening.
Ayodhya, the epicenter of ‘Ram Mandir’ recorded 38.74% voting, while Amethi, the bastion of the congress, recorded 33.95% voting, Bahraich 37.25%, Barabanki 36.23%, Chitrakoot 39.08%, Gonda 34.36 percent, Kaushambi 37.23%, Pratapgarh 33.59%, Prayagraj 33.59%, Raebareli 33.64%, Shrawasti 36.5% and Sultanpur 34.85%, according to the data.
At Kunda in the district of Pratapgargh, a Samajwadi Party candidate, Gulshan Yadav’s convoy was allegedly attacked by some people. Other party workers claimed the victim sustained minor injuries. Yadav contested in the assembly election of UP from the Kunda seat.
The districts that went to the polls were Sultanpur, Prayagraj, Barabanki, Bahraich, Chitrakoot, Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Shravasti, Gonda, Amethi, Raebareli, and Ayodhya.
The state election commission had made all necessary arrangements to ensure free and fair voting while adhering to the COVID-19 guidelines.
Prominent faces contesting for the fifth phase include Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, contesting from the Sirathu assembly seat in the Kaushambi district. Pallavi Patel from Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) challenged him for the same seat.
Other ministers in the fray were Siddharth Nath Singh from Allahabad West, Rajendra Singh, alias Moti Singh, from Patti (Pratapgarh), Nand Gopal Gupta Nadi from Allahabad South, and Ramapati Shastri from Mankapur (Gonda). Raghuraj Pratap Singh, alias Raja Bhaiya, the MLA from Kunda since 1993, is once again in the fray from his party Jansatta Dal, Gulshan Yadav, an old aide from the Samajwadi Party contesting against him.
From Apna Dal (K), which is an aide of the Samajwadi Party, Krishna Patel is contesting from the Pratapgarh seat. Krishna Patel is the mother of Union Minister Anupriya Patel.
In the final round of campaigning, which concluded on Friday, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi jointly addressed a rally in Amethi. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, addressed a series of rallies in Amethi, Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Bahraich and attacked opponents mainly on the issues of vote bank politics and ‘pariwarvad’.
Uttar Pradesh assembly election is conducted in seven phases. The last two phases of the UP assembly election will hold on the 3rd and 7th of march. Votes will be counted on the 10th of march.
