Early on Wednesday, a strong earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, raising the previous death toll estimate to 1,000. More than 3,000 homes were destroyed by the 5.9 magnitude earthquake, which also significantly damaged public property.
According to the Meteorological Department of neighboring Pakistan, the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Paktika province, roughly 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Khost. Its depth is only 10 kilometers, according to experts. More damage is typically done by shallow earthquakes.
A senior official announced on Friday that authorities in Afghanistan have stopped looking for survivors following an earthquake that claimed over 1,000 lives. Tolo New, an Afghan publication, however, had earlier cited an Islamic Emirate official as reporting that the death toll had increased to 1,100. According to Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, a spokeswoman for the disaster ministry, the earthquake on Wednesday in a remote area of the country caused the partial or entire destruction of 10,000 homes.
According to the Afghanistan-based Tolo News, the Taliban leadership in that country has set aside 1 billion afghanis to aid individuals harmed by the earthquake.
A compensation of 100,000 Afs for the surviving family members of the deceased was also declared by the Ministry of State for Natural Disaster Management.
According to Mawlawi Sharafuddin Muslim, deputy minister of state for natural disaster management, “based on the directive of the Prime Minister, it was determined to give the family of each dead person 100,000 Afs and family of each wounded person 50,000 Afs.”
The Supreme Leader of the Taliban, Mawlawi Hebatullah Akhundzada, expressed sympathy to those impacted.

India pledged to help and support Afghanistan in its “hour of need,” according to a statement. India sympathizes with the Afghan people, according to Arindam Bagchi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs.
“India sends its condolences and sympathies to the relatives of the deceased, as well as to all those affected by the devastating earthquake in Afghanistan.
In response to a request for humanitarian aid from the United Nations and others, Taiwan will provide $1 million to Afghan earthquake recovery operations, the government announced late on Thursday.
The government of Taiwan would donate “based on the spirit of humanitarian concern for disaster relief regardless of national borders responding to the United Nations and other humanitarian demands,” according to a statement from the presidential office.
After the earthquake, Japan will assist Afghanistan with the aid it needs. Seiji Kihara, the deputy chief cabinet secretary, stated during a routine news conference that the government was planning actions to “promptly give required support” in addition to evaluating the situation to understand local requirements.
Seoul’s foreign ministry announced on Thursday that South Korea planned to donate $1 million in humanitarian relief to those affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan, which claimed 1,000 lives.
To assist the earthquake-stricken neighbor, the government of Pakistan has dispatched a convoy of vehicles carrying aid supplies. According to the Pakistan-based Dawn, the trucks carrying tents, coverings, blankets, and medications are anticipated to travel to Khost via the Ghulam Khan border.
