CSK announced on Twitter on Sunday that former legendary captain MS Dhoni will lead the team once again. According to their official handle, Ravindra Jadeja has formally given over his role as the new skipper of the yellow team.
Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish the captaincy to focus and concentrate more on his game and has requested MS Dhoni to lead CSK. CSK has accepted to lead CSK in the larger interest, “said the team handle on Twitter.
In the Making Captain
CSK had appointed the veteran Jadeja as the new face of the old team after Dhoni stepped down as captain just before the beginning of this edition’s IPL. It was expected to be a smooth transition for the all-rounder, to learn the responsibilities of leading the side while Dhoni was still there to teach him.
However, the burden of captaincy seemed to affect him, as it has done many players in the past, like Virat Kohli, who also stepped down as captain recently.
Chennai’s troubles this season were transparent as the team could only win two matches out of their first eight. After an unimpressive auction, CSK would have hoped to fight with a better strategy. However, they had to miss Deepak Chahar, who will sit out this season due to injury.
Their plight was made worse as a star performer and batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to make any impact. Despite occasional contributions from Uthappa, Dube, Rayudu, and Bravo, CSK has lacked any coherent structure that is usually their backbone.
Captaincy Curse
The biggest disappointment for the team was the performance of the skipper himself. It seemed as if the lion from Gujarat had lost his passion for the bat and ball while struggling with decision-making. In the past, there were many situations where Jadeja would arrive in the lower middle order and finish the innings in style or take the side home.
But the left-handed all-rounder has failed to make an impact in any department, with many experts highlighting the new role as being too cumbersome for him.
With Dhoni back in charge, it will be interesting to see if CSK can still make the playoffs. The former Indian captain is known for his brilliancy in spontaneous and effective decision-making that has ensured his victory many times in the past. In today’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK will look to establish itself as a winning team again.
