The Public Works Department (PWD) proposes to streamline traffic congestion on the Signature bridge and on the Delhi Ring Road, running parallel to Yamuna. Planned in the year 2018, this project was priced at around Rs 3,000 crore.
The Public Works Department (PWD) plans to run a route change on the Ring Road stretch from the Signature Bridge to the DND Flyway, officials claimed earlier today. This isn’t the first time that the route change has been proposed for the project.
The Central Delhi – South Delhi seamless travel, via Ring Road
Planned in the year 2018, this project was priced at around Rs 3,000 crore. An elevated corridor parallel to Ring Road is to be constructed to provide seamless movement for the people traveling between South & Central Delhi. There are various landmarks in these two parts of Delhi like the Civil Lines, Ashram etc.
Engaged in consciously constructing, intricately designing & overall maintenance of Government assets in the field of environment & infrastructure re-establishment, Public Works Department is known to be the premier agency of the Government. Under the environment asset-building, schools, colleges, police buildings, courts etc have been built. Under the infrastructure asset-building roads, bridges, flyovers etc have been constructed.
The elevated corridor on Ring Road – Eradicating travel congestion
Constructing the elevated corridor will serve as an alternative route to the Ring Road that will run parallel to Yamuna. On project completion, traveling through primarily congested areas like Majnu Ka Tila, Meltcalfe House & Sarai Kale Khan will become hassle-free.
The Public Works Department had the initial plan of pursuing the project in two parts. The first part would comprise the elevated road between the Signature Bridge & the Salimgarh Fort-Ring Road, while in the second part this road would’ve extended to the DND Flyway.
Bridging Yamuna – An alternate Ring Road route?
However, current project escalations have been modified into the elevated road being entirely on the Yamuna floodplains. This would be in between the Signature Bridge & the DND Flyway, on the Ring Road. Sources also claim that the National Mission For Clean Ganga had asked the Public Works Department to make alterations to the route.
Along with them, the no-objection nod from a few other departments on the Ring Road route change seems to be pending as well. The Public Works Department states that the trivial matter is under consideration & will be taken up at a later date.
Elevated corridors & flyovers – Redefining hassle-free travel
The project is yet to make a start. While the feasibility study was completed in 2019, the project was announced in 2018 by the former deputy chief minister of Delhi. With a perpetual upswing in the Signature Bridge traffic on the Ring Road, the project was envisioned from the scenario. The volume of traffic is expected to increase in the coming days on Ring Road.
Post completion of the elevated corridor & flyovers between the pivotal points of Vikaspuri & Wazirabad, the entire stretch of the Outer Ring Road will be hassle-free. The seamless travel is leading to heavy congestion at Majnu Ka Tila & Metcalfe House, intersecting at the T-junction.
Another elevated corridor is in the pipeline in South Delhi for a congested-free journey from ORR to Mehrauli Badarpur Road. Constructed along the Ma Anandmayee Marg, The elevated road with flyovers will connect Kalkaji Mandir on ORR to MB Road at the Lal Kuan T-point.
