Based on the results of a study, published in Sexes medical journal, people who use dating apps exhibit Depressive symptoms and hyper sexuality (having a high sex drive).Â
People use dating apps a lot. It’s pretty common, and in some cases the behavior associated with it might be psychologically unhealthy. To test if that was true, the researchers decided to look at whether people using dating apps had higher rates of hypersexual behavior and depression symptoms.Â
Depressive symptoms : The Study
In 2020, 1000 people took an online survey. The researchers mostly saw that people who use dating apps were more likely to exhibit symptoms of depression and sexual promiscuity than people who don’t use dating apps.Â
Along with the fact that using these apps can lead to depression and/or excessive sexuality, it turns out that if you are depressed or dealing with an excessive desire to be sexual you might be using these apps as a distraction, or to try and make yourself feel better.Â
People who use dating apps tend to be men, under the age of 40, single and attracted to people of the opposite sex or the same sex.Â
One of the authors added that,Â
“Dating app use, like every technological tool, is characterized by two aspects mirroring two faces of the same coin. The use of dating app is useful to meet new people, friendships and partners, but it hides also some risks”
Depressive symptoms : Ramifications
If a psychologist, psychiatrist or teacher assesses an individual for mental health problems, they should take into account that he/she might be using an application on their smartphone to meet others online.Â
This study reveals a high correlation between using dating apps, being hypersexual, and having depressive symptoms for the first time. This data may indicate that certain hypersexual and/or unhappy people often utilize dating apps to ease their sexological and psychological pain. Â
As a result, dating apps should be seen as technical instruments that some people utilize for sexual and romantic purposes in an effort to locate a potential cure for their psychosexological problems. Â
Given these factors, it would be acceptable to think of dating apps as a potential setting to eventually boost sexological, psychological, and relationship wellness.Â
