The final IPL match that was set to take place between CSK (Chennai Super Kings) and GT (Gujarat Titans) was disrupted by the wrath of a downpour in Ahmedabad on May 28th, 2024. Sunday Fun Day for the fans or as GT would say Monday is the new Sunday.
The final of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and reigning champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium has been rescheduled to Monday because of a severe downpour in Ahmedabad. This is the first time an IPL final has been rescheduled for a reserve day.
“The #TATAIPL 2024 Final has been moved to the reserve day on May 29th – 7:30 PM IST at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.” Physical tickets purchased today will be valid the next day. “We ask that you keep the tickets safe and intact,” the IPL said on Twitter.
May 28th
The match was supposed to commence at 7 30 pm with the toss taking place between both the captains, namely Hardik Pandya leading Gujarat Titans(GT) and MS Dhoni leading Chennai Super Kings(CSK). However, the downpour at Ahmedabad indefinitely stopped play for the day.
When the downpour stopped at around 8:55 PM, the soppers sprang into action right away to dry the ground and pitch area and ensure full overs were possible. Given that the cut-off time was 9:35 PM, the players began to warm up in preparation for the match’s start. However, before that could happen, the downpour returned with a heavy vengeance. The covers were drawn back, and fans ran back to seek protection as puddles of water formed around the covers.
On-field umpire Rod Tucker reported to the broadcasters that the latest probable time for play was 12:06 AM and that the groundsmen gave them a one-hour window to facilitate cleaning and drying of the field. He raised concern and apprehension, noting that if the downpour lasted until 11 o clock, a serious problem would be encountered.
May 29th
The constant downpour went on late into the night, causing the match to be rescheduled until the following day which is May 29th, 2024.
The reserve day’s cut-off time restrictions remain the same as they were on Sunday. After 9:35 p.m., the match authorities will begin lowering the overs, with a five-overs game possible as late as 12:06 a.m. (IST). There will also be an opportunity to settle the dispute with a super over, for which the outfield and pitch must be ready by 1.20 AM (IST).
If no matches are feasible on the reserve day, the team with the highest point total at the end of the 70-match league phase will be announced as the emerging victorious champion. Gujarat Titans will win the trophy, according to this rule. It has won the championship after playing 14 games in the league stage. CSK finished second in terms of points.
Weather forecast today
A thunderstorm is expected to occur around 5 p.m., according to the weather forecast. The prognosis, however, does not indicate any downpour throughout the scheduled match hours. This unplanned revelation throws a ray of hope, hinting that a full match could take place today.
There’s a 40 percent chance of a downpour, 45 percent of humidity, and the highest temperature recorded would be 39 degrees Celsius.
While the violent thunderstorm may be visible for a short time, it is projected to pass within an hour, leaving the playing field undamaged. As a result, the stage is set for an exciting and unbroken battle, where players and fans alike may celebrate the prospect of seeing a complete and entertaining match.
