The Indian Football season is all set to start from 16th August with Mohammaden Sporting welcoming FC Goa to play at the Salt Lake stadium.
The tournament will start with last year’s finalists facing each other in the first game. This time Durand Cup is going to be exciting than ever as more teams will participate with their main team.
This time 20 teams will participate in this oldest tournament of Asia. There are going to be four groups with five teams clubbed in each group. Top two teams of each group will face each other in the knockout and the tournament will be concluded following the commencement of the semi-finals and finals.
This time 11 Indian Super League teams, 5 I- League teams and 4 teams from Indian military forces will participate in this tournament.
The tournament will start with FC Goa facing last year’s runners up Mohammaden Sporting in the inaugural game of this season’s competition in the Salt Lake Stadium of Kolkata.
The theme song of this competition is sung by Bollywood popular singers Shaan and Papon who both belong from the cradles of football West Bengal and Assam respectively.
Many players including our National team captain Sunil Chhetri is pumped up to participate in this tournament. This is a very special tournament for Sunil Chhetri as he is one of the biggest treasures of this tournament.
While playing for Delhi FC in this competition, 16- year-old Sunil Chhetri attracted the mighty Mohun Bagan who eventually signed him after the 2-3 weeks of trails.
The flipside of this is Durand Cup is the only Indian domestic tournament that Sunil Chhetri has failed to win. With being at the ending stage of his career, Sunil Chhetri would love to add one last feather to his cap.
This whole tournament is going to be held in the three states West Bengal, Assam, and Manipur. This is going to be for the first-time that a big tournament like Durand Cup will be held in Manipur.
The whole tournament will be broadcasted in the Sports 18 news channel and streamed on Voot.
