On Tuesday, 5th April 2022, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor, Shaym Sundar Agarwal appealed for the closure of the meat shops from April 2nd to April 11th due to the Hindu festival of Navratri.
After the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor’s directives to shut all the meat shops in the area owing to the Navratri festival, the EDMC mayor additionally appealed to all the meat sellers to understand the sentiments of Hindus and added that it’ll promote harmony.
According to the ANI tweet, he said that they don’t consume even onion-garlic during the festival and further added that they have a rule that slaughterhouses won’t function on Saptami (7th day), Ashtami (8th day) and the day of Navratri.
Yesterday, on 4th April 2022, South Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Mukkesh Suryaan wrote a letter to the SDMC commissioner asking for the closure of meat shops till April 11. Stating that the ‘religious beliefs and sentiments of devotees’ are affected when they come across meat shops on their visit to the temples during the festival of Navratri, he ordered to ensure strict adherence to his directives to close meat shops in the letter. Although, an official order is yet to be issued on this matter.
Around 1,500 registered meat shops are under the SDMC jurisdiction. If the order is passed to close meat shops in view of the Hindu festival, the livelihood of the families owning meat shops would at stake.
