Screen time has increased manifolds during the pandemic. It can cause ‘digital eyes strain’, pain in the eyes, constant headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes etc.
Since the pandemic has begun, all of our work, like classes, office meetings, business, office work etc., has shifted online, and we are in front of our laptop or mobile screens most of the time. We usually start at 9 am, and our work is done by 6 pm. We expose our eyes to almost 10 to 12 hours of screen time, which is too much.
Such increased screen time can be harmful to the health of our eyes. It could also lead to blurred vision, and we might have to start wearing glasses.
This article will explain why screen time is harmful, what health issues one can face due to excessive screen time, and how to tackle it.
Why is screen time harmful?
Most of our laptops, mobile and computer screens emit blue light harmful to the eyes. The light emitted from our devices is as risky as the light emitted by the sun. We do pay heed to UV rays emitted from the sun. However, we forget to take care of our eyes, and as a result, it can weaken our eyesight and the skin.
Health issues caused due to excessive screen time
Being too much in front of the screen in the screen can lead to blurry vision, dry eyes, watery eyes, pain in the eyes, near-sightedness- it is a condition where closer objects are clearly visible, but far of things aren’t visible, far-sightedness- it is a condition where farther things are visible, but nearer things aren’t visible, astigmatism- a situation where the curves of the eyes can become imperfect.
Digital eye strain also includes itchy eyes, reddening eyes, constant headaches, pain in the neck and shoulders. These eye problems are collectively known as “digital eye strain” or “Computer Vision Syndrome“.
What to do to avoid “digital eye strain”?
Most of these problems are caused because the distance between our eyes and the screen is short. Hence, it is good to keep the computer or laptop screen at a distance. The top of the screen should be at your eye level.
It shouldn’t be too low or too high. Also, the distance between the screen and your eyes should be between 18 to 3o inches. It would not only help your eyes but will also help in correcting your posture. It is a win-win situation.
As per your convenience, tilt the screen a little backwards. It will result in better vision and, at the same time, will prevent the reflection of ceiling lights. It is a good idea to buy devices that come with a non-reflective screen so that light glares are less.
You can also keep the brightness of your device low or according to your surroundings. For example, increasing the brightness will be a good idea if you are in a brighter place. However, lowering the screen’s brightness will work wonders if you are in a dark place.
You must make it a habit to clean the screens you are working on time and again. Sometimes, the dust on the screens can lead to an unclear view of the content on the screen. You can also add a humidifier in your houses that will increase the moisture in the air and will prevent making your eyes dry.
You should also use eye drops before working on the screen and during the day so that the eyes don’t dry up. However, do consult an eye doctor before opting for an eye drop. Also, one last tip would be to take a break from the screen and close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes. It prevents the eyes from getting strained.
Thus, in a world full of screen time, take out a few minutes from your busy schedule and relax your eyes. Your eyes will thank you later.
