The Nagaland State Election Commissioner, T Mhabemo Yanthan, has announced that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will take immediate effect throughout the entirety of the Municipal and Town Council areas that will be voting as soon as the Election Program is made public following its announcement.
Yanthan stated that the MCC will apply to all candidates, political parties, and the apparatus of the state government.
Furthermore, Yanthan informed that the State Election Commission has decided to implement mandatory voter identification for the upcoming municipal council and town council elections as per the Nagaland Municipal Rules 2003.
This decision was made to prevent the practice of personation. Yanthan emphasized that the State Election Commission will publish separate instructions regarding this matter.
The implementation of the MCC will ensure that all political parties and candidates adhere to ethical and fair campaign practices. The State Election Commission has taken this step to ensure that the election process is conducted with transparency, integrity, and impartiality.
Yanthan explained that the MCC lays out guidelines for political parties and candidates to follow during the campaign period. The guidelines include refraining from making personal attacks on other candidates and avoiding the use of inflammatory language. The MCC also prohibits the use of government resources for campaigning purposes.
Yanthan urged all political parties and candidates to follow the MCC and uphold the spirit of fair competition. He emphasized that any violation of the MCC will be dealt with strictly by the Election Commission.
In addition to the implementation of the MCC, Yanthan shared that the State Election Commission has decided to implement mandatory voter identification for the upcoming municipal council and town council elections. He explained that this decision was made to prevent the practice of personation, which is the act of assuming someone else’s identity to vote fraudulently.
Yanthan informed that the State Election Commission will publish separate instructions regarding mandatory voter identification. He encouraged all voters to comply with this requirement and to bring the necessary identification documents to the polling booth.
Yanthan’s announcement emphasizes the importance of conducting free and fair elections in Nagaland. To safeguard against ‘personation’ under Rule 54 of the Nagaland Municipal Rules 2003, the State Election Commission has decided that compulsory identification of voters will be made in the ensuing polls. The Commission informed that it would issue separate instructions in this regard.
‘’The implementation of the MCC and mandatory voter identification are steps toward achieving this goal.’’ says yanthan
