Elon Musk is hoping to launch his new monster rocket system within the next few months.
During a presentation while standing in front of what he calls the Starship, the US entrepreneur stated that the vehicle was technically close to completion.
It is the licensing authority, and it will not issue a flight permit until an environmental assessment has been completed.
This should be completed by March.
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, said Thursday that the first orbital flight of his colossal Starship—the world’s most powerful rocket ever built—could happen in a month or two.
While he expects failures, he believes Starship will reach orbit by the end of the year.
While standing alongside the 390-foot (119-meter) rocket at SpaceX’s Texas spaceport, Musk provided his first major Starship update in more than two years. “Let’s make this real!” he exclaimed to the late-night crowd.
“This is some crazy stuff right here,” he said. “In fact, it’s difficult to believe it’s true.”
NASA intends to land astronauts on the moon using the fully reusable Starship as early as 2025. Meanwhile, Musk hopes to send a fleet of Starships to Mars to build a city and transport supplies and people.
For the time being, the initial flights will place Musk’s internet satellites, known as Starlinks, into orbit.
Musk recapped his ultimate vision for colonizing Mars as “life insurance” in the event of a disaster on Earth, as well as the first step in expanding humanity’s footprint beyond the solar system, in his first detailed progress report on the project since 2019.
Musk also provided some updates for fans, including an illustration of how one Starship would be sent to refuel another on deep space voyages, as well as the thrust .Musk estimates that a Starship launch could cost less than $10 million—possibly as little as a few million dollars with a high flight rate, which would lower prices. By current space standards, he described it as “crazy low” and “ridiculously good.”
Starship already has one private customer: a Japanese entrepreneur who has purchased a flight around the moon and intends to bring a dozen artists with him. Musk hinted that others are interested in purchasing trips, stating that further announcements would be made in the near future
Until now, SpaceX has relied on its much smaller Falcon rockets to deliver satellites, astronauts, and cargo to NASA’s International Space Station. Its first private flight, purchased by a billionaire, took place in September of last year. Another flight to the space station is scheduled for the end of March, with three businessmen paying $55 million each.
