England World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan
England World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan is set to announce his retirement from international cricket.
England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan is set to announce his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday. The 35-year-old English skipper led his team to the 2019 World Cup crown with both the ODI and T20 sides rising to No 1 in the world rankings under his leadership. His 16 years of cricketing career includes a shining record of over 10,000 runs across ODIs and T20Is.
As per sources, the Dublin-born Eoin Morgan wanted to play for England at this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia but he changed his decision after struggling with his form and fitness in the last 18 months.
The right-handed batsman missed the third and final ODI against the Netherlands on Wednesday due to a “groin niggle.” Morgan led England in the first two ODI games against the Netherlands but was dismissed for a duck in two high-scoring matches.
There was much speculation over Morgan’s future, prior to these reports of retirement, which are anticipated to be confirmed on Tuesday because he had only one half-century in his previous 26 outings for England in white-ball matches.
England vice-captain Jos Buttler is now the favorite for the ECB as captain as he has stepped in for Morgan when needed. Buttler’s first assignment could be a high-profile series against India, comprising three T20s and three ODIs starting on July 7, before the same against South Africa.
Morgan made his ODI debut for Ireland in 2006 before switching allegiances to England in 2009. He will retire having played a total of 248 ODIs, scoring 7,701 runs with 14 centuries, as well as 115 T20Is, adding a further 2,458 runs and 14 fifties. Morgan also scored two centuries in 16 Tests between 2010 and 2012.
Before the 2015 50-over World Cup in Australia, Morgan had taken Alastair Cook’s place as the white-ball captain. After an embarrassing tournament exit, Morgan led his team to victory and revolutionized English white-ball cricket by promoting a bold, aggressive style of play. The World Cup 2019 win at Lord’s in 2019, served as the revolution’s peak and pushed the team to the top of the global rankings in ODI and T20I formats.
