Assassinations of Leaders
To discourage any potential assassins of our political leaders, the government has strengthened its security protocols.
Here’s a closer look at some of the most significant assassinations of leaders in American history that sent shockwaves throughout the country.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Nathuram Godse, in court while on trial for murder, confessed: After thirty-two years of provocation, culminating in his last pro-Muslim fast, he finally came to the conviction that Gandhi’s existence should be ended immediately.
On his way to evening prayers, the ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi, who successfully assisted India in gaining political independence from Britain in 1947, was assassinated by the Hindu zealot Nathuram Godse in 1948.
He spearheaded several well-known nonviolent protests, including a 241-mile march to the Indian coast to harvest salt, which resulted in the imprisonment of 60,000 innocent demonstrators. His death struck the entire planet like a tonne of bricks.
He was a messiah for the poor, a tremendous personality as a leader who could have changed the face of India after independence, and it was sad that he had to meet his death in this manner.
He became a symbol of what mass protests may achieve after his death and an icon to succeeding personalities like Martin Luther King Jr. and US President Barack Obama.
Controversial Leader Indira Gandhi
Daughter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Priyadarshini Gandhi, one of the most controversial leaders- Indira Gandhi.
She led the country for 15 years and was shot by two of her Sikh bodyguards in 1984. The assassination was in response to operation “Bluestar” in Golden Temple: Gandhi’s order to the army for raiding the Golden Temple, the holiest Sikh shrine, to flush out Sikh separatists who were inside.
During 1966–77 and 1980–84, Indira Gandhi was the only prime minister to serve four terms. Gandhi was the world’s second-longest-serving female Prime Minister and the world’s second-longest-serving female head of state.
Her unique method of administration served the interests of the people of the country wholeheartedly during her time as Prime Minister.
Two Sikh bodyguards shot this great lady at her home at No. 1, Safdarjung Road in New Delhi, on the morning of October 31, 1984. To avenge the operation, Indira Gandhi was slain by her Sikh bodyguards.
Satwant Singh was hanged to death, while Beant Singh was slain on the scene. Gandhi’s death caused widespread violence. Within days, mobs killed thousands of Sikhs, and many police officers and government officials didn’t stop the violence but helped incite it.
Rajiv Gandhi
After his mother’s death, Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister, but he was slain in southern India by a Tamil Tigers suicide bomber in the year 1991. He was no longer in power at the time and was campaigning for Prime Minister again.
Gandhi had made enemies with the Tamil Tigers, a militant group based in Sri Lanka, after sending tens of thousands of troops to assist Sri Lanka in fighting the Tigers four years before.
According to The New York Times, his death left a “political hole” in India because his family had headed the government for most of the 45 years leading up to his death.
Rajiv Gandhi was Indira Gandhi’s eldest son and India’s seventh Prime Minister.
After his brother Sanjay Gandhi died, Indira Gandhi dragged him into politics, and his decision to enter politics was purely coincidental. Like his mother, he was a capable leader.
He promoted science and technology development in the country, worked to improve relations with the Soviet Union, established several higher education programs in the country, and started programs to help rural people, among other things.
The attack was carried out in retaliation for India’s dispatch of a peacekeeping force to Sri Lanka to combat LTTE rebels. Rajiv Gandhi was campaigning at Sriperumbudur on that tragic day when many supporters and well-wishers approached him.
As a well-wisher, Dhanu also approached him and bent down to touch his feet, and she detonated an RDX-laced belt right away. In addition to Rajiv Gandhi, 14 other people were murdered in the bomb incident. The entire nation was shocked by his assassination.
Phoolan Devi
She was a notorious dacoit turned politician who was accused of murdering 22 Thakurs in the tragic Behmai massacre.
These were the same Thakurs who had stripped her naked and raped her in front of the entire village when she was a young girl, forcing her to resort to stealing as a result.
She surrendered after the tragedy and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. She later became involved in politics and became a member of the Samajwadi Party.
She ran for the 11th Lok Sabha election in 1996 and won from the Mirzapur constituency. In the year 2001; she was assassinated outside her official house on June 25. At the time, she was a sitting member of Parliament.
Three assailants opened fire on her. She was shot five times and died instantly. Sher Singh Rana, the prime suspect in the attack, later surrendered. Phoolan’s assassination, he claims, was carried out in retaliation for the Behmai atrocity.
Pramod Vyankatesh Mahajan
Pramod Mahajan was one of the BJP’s most well-liked second-generation leaders. He was the party’s general secretary, a member of the Rajya Sabha, and a Lok Sabha election winner.
Pramod Mahajan was one of a group of young politicians who hoped to reshape India’s political landscape by adopting modern ideas. He was well-liked in Maharashtra, where he was born.
It was the year 2006. Pravin Mahajan, his brother, shot him on April 22. A family feud was the catalyst for the attack. Pramod Mahajan died of his wounds on May 3, 2006, after 13 days in the hospital. Pravin Mahajan was condemned to a life sentence.
