The opening ceremony kicks off with a cultural show at the AI Bayt stadium. It all began after a 30-second countdown.
After some excellent lightsabers and the FIFA World cup song, Hollywood star Morgan Freeman touched the hearts of the audience with some optimistic speeches after BTS singer Jung kook took the center. He performs his new track, ‘Dreamers’ with Qatari singer Fahad AL Kutaisi.
France legend Marcel Desailly presents the World Cup trophy to the fans before the opening ceremony. He lifts the trophy to show the fans, who cheer for the ex-footballer loudly.
The first match was between Qatar and Ecuador. Ecuador blows away Qatar in the opening game. The 33-year-old Valencia scored all three of Ecuador’s goals in their last World Cup in 2014 and Sunday’s double cemented his status as a national hero.
For Ecuador, Ener Valencia first scored from the penalty spot and then headed in a header to seal the win for Ecuador. And Qatar became the first host nation to lose a World Cup opener.
There was no miracle comeback for the Qatari team at Al Bayt Stadium and no sign of outstanding football from the hosts. Qatar’s hopes now rest solely on results to get out of Group A against Senegal and the Netherlands.
As per the BBC News report.
“This is the most controversial World Cup in history and not a ball has even been kicked,” Lineker, the former England football captain, said in his opening monologue.
“Since FIFA chose Qatar in 2010, the smallest country to host football’s biggest competition has faced some big questions. From allegations of corruption in the bidding process to the treatment of migrant workers who built the stadium where many lost their lives.”
