Fina, which is the swimming’s governing body said to stop transgender athletes from taking part in women’s elite races if they have experienced any part of the process of male puberty. Fina will also direct to set up an ‘open’ category at competitions for swimmers of transgender athletes. This new policy that was proceeded with 71% of the vote from 152 members of Fina was narrated as the ‘only first step towards full involvement for the transgender athletes.
The policy document of 34 pages stated that male-to-female transgender can take in the women’s category but on the condition that they have not gone through any part of male puberty beyond Tanner Stage 2 or before their 12 years of age, whichever is later. This decision was made during a general congress at the ongoing world championship that is being held in Budapest. With this decision, Lia Thomas, who is the transgender American college swimmer who has conveyed a desire to take part in the Olympics, would be stopped to get involved in the female category. President of Fina, Husain-Al-Musallam stated that the organization was trying to save the rights of the organization’s athletes to take part but also save the fairness of the competition.
