In the murders mentioned, the police are constantly stuck due to a lack of tangible evidence. Over the years, these cases run cold and turned into chilling mysteries.
Here are five strange murder mysteries that still remain unsolved in India.
1. The Stoneman mysteries.
In the years 1985 to 1989, a series of similar killings took place in Kolkata and Mumbai. At least 13 people were killed in their sleep, on separate occasions in Kolkata in 1989. A similar set of killings also appeared earlier in Mumbai from 1985 to 1988.
The name “The Stoneman” was given to the perpetrator by a popular English print media in Kolkata. Since then, speculations say that a single person could have been responsible for up to 26 murders in the two cities.
Though the Stoneman was credited for 13 murders in just 6 months, it was never confirmed if they were committed by a single person or a group of people. The Kolkata Police too at the time could not figure out if the crimes may have been committed as copycat killings.
No one has been charged for all 26 murders. The killer remains unidentified.
2. Divya Bharti
The conspiracy theories pertaining to the death of the popular actress Divya Bharti were too many. Divya Bharti, who would have been 48 this year, died suddenly at the age of just 19 in 1993.
The death of the Bollywood actress was much discussed and talked about in the 90s. Bharti passed away as she fell from the balcony of her apartment in Mumbai. The speculations range from her husband being involved in her death to even speculation of the involvement of the mafia.
Though the circumstances of her untimely death were strange, her father stated that her death was simply an accident.
3. Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur
Amar Singh Chamkila was a popular Punjabi singer-songwriter and composer. However, he and his wife, Amarjot Kaur, were killed along with two more members of their band in 1988. The crimes were committed by a group of unknown youngsters.
It is speculated that the murders may have been due to the recurring themes in his music. Chamkila often wrote about drug use, coming of age, love, and so on. These contents were then considered “controversial” and maybe have offended the youth that committed the murders.
They were shot by a group of armed motorcyclists during their show in Mehsampur, Punjab. The killers remain unidentified and the case a mystery.
4. Sunanda Pushkar
Sunanda Pushkar was a popular figure as a socialite and wife of diplomat and major politician, Shashi Tharoor. However, Pushkar passed away under strange circumstances in 2014.

Consequently, Sunanda claimed that her account was not hacked and took credit for posting the messages on Tharoor’s Twitter.
The next day, Tharoor and Pushkar put out a statement saying that they were both happily married. Sunanda Pushkar was then found dead in her hotel room.
Her death was said to have death occurred due to poisoning, or a drug overdose.
