The capital, Delhi, has been abuzz with activity as the time for the G20 comes near. Massive mountains of waste that were never cleaned up for years are now being cleaned up in time for the G20. The cab drivers are all getting trained in proper etiquette, and their rides should be in good condition.
English-speaking and Gender Sensitive Traits
The government, through the transport department, hailed Uber’s representatives and told them that their drivers who chanced upon a G20 Summit delegate should know English, should be culturally literate, and should be gender sensitive.
The representatives were also told to see to it that the cab would be in good condition and easily available within minutes of being booked. The cabs should be available around venues where G20 Summit-related events are scheduled and also around the hotels in which the delegates have been put up.
International Card Payments
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena chaired a meeting with the Transport Department to assess G20 preparations on February 2. Following this, the transport department had two rounds of meetings with Uber officials related to the training of partner drivers, which is essential in dealing with foreign delegates.
There was also the suggestion of making the payment portals compatible with debits from international credit cards. It is necessary, as most delegates have access to Uber and use credit cards.
G20 and its Importance
The G20 Summit is a forum for the governments and central bank governors of 20 major economies around the world. The G20 countries represent 85% of global gross domestic product (GDP), 80% of global trade, and two-thirds of the world’s population.
The main purpose of the G20 is to facilitate international economic cooperation and decision-making on issues related to global economic growth and stability. The leaders of the G20 countries meet annually to discuss and coordinate policies to address global economic challenges and opportunities.
Etiquette Training for the Drivers
Since the G20 is such a huge international event, the government is pretty serious about every single thing. The secretary-cum-commissioner of the transport department, Ashish Kundra, said that there will be another meeting in the coming days to further discuss things. For now, they have been told to train the drivers in language, etiquette, and dressing sense.
Many of the drivers are already undergoing training, either online or in person. Kundra also said that well-trained drivers and well-conditioned vehicles will be made available to delegates by the app through geo-fencing.
Geo-fencing is a location-based technology that creates a virtual boundary around a physical area. When a device enters or leaves this boundary, it triggers a pre-defined action. Geo-fencing is commonly used on mobile devices through GPS, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth technologies.
Short and Well-Planned Routes
The transportation department has requested that the app create short-distance and planned routes. Due to this, when delegates are on their way to or returning from an event, they can sightsee and visit tourist attractions, markets, monuments, or anything that shows the culture of Delhi.
This will enable the delegates and dignitaries to experience the culture of Delhi in short trips, and they also might not have to spend time on planning the itinerary. They can also visit tourist spots and markets in one trip. In order to give a hassle-free experience, Uber has been asked to ensure everything goes well from their side, like hassle-free payments through international cards.
