Glenn McGrath believes that the current Australian team’s toughest task will be to perform well and win a Test series in India.
Veteran Glenn McGrath stated that the current Australian team’s greatest task is to win a series in India. “Obviously, the single biggest challenge for Australia is coming to India, performing well and winning the series”, he said.
The Australian team will play a four-match Test series against the Indian side, early in the next year . India has lately dominated both at home and in Australia. It makes the Border-Gavaskar Trophy one of the most heated rivalries in recent memory.
2004 was the last time when Aussies were successful in India. That time McGrath was a member of the visiting Australian side that won the series. The Australians have shown indications of improvement recently, performing well in subcontinent conditions during visits to Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
As published by the ICC’s official website, McGrath told that winning a series in India would be Australia’s most difficult assignment. He stated that the club will need to devise effective strategies in order to defeat the Indians.
The Australian icon went on to remark that the current players have played in the IPL previously so they are familiar with the Indian conditions. He further explained that their recent excursions other countries indicate their better grasp of playing on subcontinent pitches.
“I think with IPL, a lot of players have been over here (in India) regularly and have hence experienced the conditions. The current Australian team, evident from their showings in Sri Lanka and Pakistan, are starting to get a better understanding of how to play on sub-continent wickets. That being said, India is still the ultimate challenge. I think they’re up for it.”
McGrath finished by stating that the Australian squad will be prepared to face the challenge in India.
McGrath is a bowler who has excelled in Indian conditions. He took 33 wickets at an average of 21.3 in his eight Test matches in India. 14 of those matches came in the 2004–05 series win. When asked what skills foreign bowlers required to excel in Indian conditions, McGrath emphasized ball control. He also said that the capacity to adjust to effective lengths is essential.
