The 2023 Fortinet Championship under the FedExCup Fall season is in full force. Sahith Theegala among the professionals in this prestigious event is heading the leaderboard. Currently, the American golfer holds a two-shot lead over the T2 holders. The second berth is shared by Justin Thomas, Kim Seong-hyeon, and Cameron Davis.
While anticipation surrounds the finale on Sunday and who will ultimately take the crown home, it is salient to note how the performances of Theegala and Ryder Cup player Justin Thomas have been so far. Both have been ruthless on the greens along with displaying their best skills on the American field.
The third round of Sahith Theegala
Known for his precise putting, Sahith Theegala was able to execute his skills as planned. Reflecting on this aspect of his game, the PGA Tour Pro revealed his mindset during the game. As he was met with a series of pars which did not help the golfer much, Theegala revealed that it was the patience that helped him make his way on the course with a club in hand.
While the player as the leader of the board is in the search of his first PGA Tour victory, the first few minutes into Day 3 didn’t go as planned. However, soon, Theegala took charge of his game as he executed four birdies at back-nine. This allowed the golfer to card five-under 67 and head into Sunday with a confident lead.
Interestingly, not only did this performance featured 4 birdies but also included a bogey-free round. Per the golfer, his expectation and aim did not exceed post wanting to improve his game. Sahith Theegala said that form him the goal “hasn’t necessarily been to win.”
He looks forward to:
“Keep putting myself in contention on the back nine come Sunday, and that’s what I hope to do tomorrow.”Theegala
Justin Thomas and his resilient comeback
Justin Thomas, since his entry into the US Ryder Cup team, has put forward a confident persona. This is especially true when JT was asked if he would like to take the Fortinet Championship as a chance to redeem himself infront of the viewers.
The answer of the 2-time major winner was a clear no. His only focus was to improve his game and get back in form. It appears that JT accomplished just that. At T2 currently, the golfer is just 2 shots behind the leader of the board.
Additionally, he made two back-to-back birdies on 12th and 13th hole. This allowed the golfer to conceded 7-under 65 which recorded as the day score of the day. While the birdie execution was already exceptional, the eagle he scored on the 15th role might have ben a memorable one for the golfer.
Confidence in his game leaves room for improvement for Justin Thomas
Despite a brilliant display of skills at the Silverado Resort and Golf Course, Justin Thomas believe there was still room for major improvement in his round. He said, “I just felt like I was not very sharp today in terms of my actual golf game.”
Although, the professional did mention that being in the contention this week, prior to the Ryder Cup, is more encouraging than anything. It is utterly reasonable given how badly the PGA Tour Pro had been struggling on the greens. So much so, that he even missed cut in more than two major tournaments.
More than anything else, JT was grateful for where he was mentally. This encouraged the golfer to believe that good things are likely to occur in the future. Per Thomas, this was a great place to start the upcoming competitive drive.
